Taking damage

By Boofus, in Warhammer Invasion Rules Questions

Hi!

What is the ruling for taking damage? Thyrus Gorman and Arrer Boyz have this wording and I wonder why it's "...takes damage" and not "...is dealt damage". It seems like this is a special kind of damage, especially after the "moving damage" clarification in the FAQ.

How can I send this to Mr. Hata?

It does seem like it may be a different classification of damage. You can send this to James via the rules link at the bottom of this page.

Mr. Hata's response:

"Taking damage is not a special kind of damage. For your examples of Thyrus Gorman and the Arrer Boyz, "takes damage" is there to indicate that the source of the damage is the unit itself. That is the only difference."

By that ruling, seems like Arrer Boyz + Big 'Uns combo in BZ would work.

I hadn't thought of that combo... it seems like cheating, almost.

And having the ability to keep that 1 damage on the 'Ar Boys unlocks many different abilities for the orks.

Nasty.

Great to have the clarification, but while powerful is not cheating. They have to pay for the combo and that limits how many times it can effectively be used in a round. What will be interesting is to see if anyone starts putting together a serious Orc control deck which can utilize this combo, because Orc Blitz has other cards to focus on.

Again, I guess I'm not seeing a combo with Arrer Boyz & Big Uns? What's the combo here?

Arrer Boyz - "Battlefield. Action: Spend 2 resources to deal 1 damage to one target unit in any battlefield. Arrer Boyz then takes 1 damage."

Big 'Uns - "Battlefield. Your damaged units gain Toughness 1."

So you need both units in play. You spend 2 resources to damage an opponents unit in their BZ and Arrer Boyz damage themselves for 1. Now Big 'Uns constant effect now initiates on them giving them Toughness 1. From this point on Arrer Boyz have damage assigned but it can no longer be applied when they use their ability, since it is canceled by Toughness. Essentially turning them into the most efficient direct damage dealing unit in this game.
