gencon Storyline choice & story'Smokeless fire' is up

By Matrim, in Legend of the Five Rings: The Card Game

I'm wondering which side of the conflict Crab/Scorp will stand. I see arguments for taking either side for each clan.

Yeah they pretty much laid it out for the Crab in the fiction.

Weaken the enemy or get a new weapon against it. Seems like a bit of a win either way

So, per Legends of the Burning Sands, the beings of Smokeless Fire are the Jinn. I looked this card up recently, but didn't think I would need it again so soon:latest?cb=20161203162310

The flavour text is particularly interesting.

I'd also point out this article: http://l5r.wikia.com/wiki/Kaleel_(jinn)

To be honest all clans except for Scorpion have it laid out for them.

If meishōdō gets banned Phoenix gets their magic monopoly back, it gets easier for Lion to presure the Unicorn both politically and militarily, and, on the other hand Crane loses face for helping them bring something dangerous to the Empire and Dragon, I don't know, maybe they have to break the alliance and stop getting people. Pretty much reverse the results if meishōdō gets the o.k. for now.

Did people usually go for decisions that benefited their clan or for what they thought would be interesting?

That......is and has been an entire thread by itself.

luckily this time is a vote.

some of the prizes in O5R have gone in ...strange directions.

I'm in favour of breaking the Phoenix monopoly in Void shugenjas.

As long as the Unicorn don't get any I'll agree??

I'd vote for what I think that makes more sense to me from my "in-game" interests. Seems more safe that voting for what seems more interesting.

Totally. That was the whole point of leaving Rokugan and exploring. But if Rokugan were not Rokugan, it'd get Utaku steeds for everyone, better mapping systems, meishodo, less strained relations between castes,...

By the way, spoiler for the next poll after this one: curved blades, ban or share?

Good catch. Gives more strength to the jinn theory. If the trapped spirit is a jinn it leaves room for meishōdō to be dangerous without necessarily being so, since I assume it would be rare for something as powerful as that to be bound to a talisman (would make sense for the Unicorn to bring an special talisman if they have to make a display for the Emperor).

my own two cent speculation.

If meshowatsis gets banned, it's conflict with the Phoenix and/or Lion .

If it gets legalized, magical hijinx ensue with jinn running around the empire.

I know it's a tired message from basically every Phoenix player on here, but I really don't want any of us to be super maho prone. Let us do cool things with actual magic. Make void magic more prevalent!

No deal, sir/madam! Maho for the maho god!

That said, this Unicorn magic is strange and clearly evil; I would love to see it outlawed just to see what happens.

Thanks. Yeah I heard it got a little crazy. I guess looking at the story summaries once the story ended just doesn't give the whole picture.

p.s. Running out of likes is painful. When was this even implemented?

I've realized there's a bit of an irony here. There has been a general agreement among us that we wanted to see the shuggies as more priestly and less wizardly. However if meishodo goes widespread we will have ACTUAL sorcery in the empire.

Once During a kotei season (I think) the Crab winners picked an elephant and a mutant to receive whatever the prize was. I scratched my for awhile over that one.??

so it was mentioned on the spider forum, and i had my little freakout on the discord, but i thought i'd mention it here to. this story is notable because of these lines:

Quote

Kaede found the the Emperor and his children

Quote

She surfaced from the darkness and gasped at the returned warmth of the sun. The Emperor—the princes

in the old canon, Hantei XXXVIII had exactly two kids. One, Sotorii (who we see leering at Kaede) would go on to be possessed by Fu Leng after his father was scorpioned. The other, however, never made it to being a prince. His mother was kidnapped while pregnant with him, and he was born among bloodspeaker, then chucked into jigoku to become Daigotsu.

yeahhhhhhhhhhhhh

So either we've just had our first new canon appearance of the man who would have/still could/your best guess here become Daigotsu, or they've added a new sibling (and maybe the old kidnap plotline still happened, just offscreen?). Either way, interesting stuff.

Daigotsu is hardly the first would-be Hantei heir that caused trouble. Speaking personally, I'd rather see Iuchiban finally get his non-gimped day.

I wholeheartedly agree.?

I'm extremely happy after reading this fiction. I was worried that this would just end up being another repeat of the clan wars with some minor changes. I am thrilled that the first conflict will be over Unicorn's magic and that it could lead to a clan war that doesn't involve the clans trying to take over the empire.

I don't think it will matter too much if it gets banned or accepted. My predictions is that it won't matter which is chosen because someone will use it and it will get out of hand causing the first major disaster.

Hopefully if they do this the build up will be slow and we don't end up with a massive disaster every other day when this story arc is finished.

I'm also thrilled that the decision will come down to several players instead of just one. I really hope they keep doing this for all major tournaments. For minor tournaments they could give all the winners across the world a single vote. A poll would be taken to see what option gets the most votes.

Hopefully, although they've already stated that the Shogun (Winter Court World Championship winner) will be making the next major storyline decision single-handedly. After Gen Con, the only announced influence I see Hatamotos having at events is contributing their win-loss record to an inter-clan competition for the Emperor's Favor, to decide which clan is "hosting" the Winter Court that year. Obviously though there is much to yet be announced for OP and Koteis that we can look forward to.

Oh and I wouldn't count out the whole "clan tries to take over the empire" plot just yet. That Unicorn champ seems keen on dragging Rokugan into the "future" if their clan fiction is any indicator. Who knows how they might react to either result of this storyline decision, let alone if the decision is made to ban meishodo. Unicorn Clan Coup? ;)

I killed that mutant with my Kotei win! But he got better. Maybe I'll get the chance to finish the job someday?

The Crab will not tolerate this blatant attempt by the Phoenix to eliminate a perceived threat to their power base and rob the Empire of a potential weapon against the forces of the Shadowlands.

However, in order to assuage their concerns about the spiritual protection of the Empire we are prepared to support the reestablishment of the office of Jade Champion.

Also, if the Unicorn would like to strengthen the bonds between our two Clans by having one of their Champion's sons marry our Champions daughter that'd be cool.

You monster! Because of you Spider won that season!

Plus, it being a Jinn opens up possibilities of Legend of the Burning Sands expansion :D

Assassins! Yodotai! Senpet! Ivindi! Medinat el-Salaam!

*swoons and drools*

Looks like the crab have a good cohesion on the vote. Anything that gives us a new way to fight shadowlands has to be good. I will say though the way the vote goes seems interesting going with the most diverse vote rather than most popular mans that every clan is making a difference. My question is douse the vote of each clan go by majority, or is it as long as someone from the clan votes? Ether way it will get rid of bounty and create more of a discretionary fund to help convince clans to vote the way you want. If anything this system lets us be even more political as we make deals and have debates.

Most diverse is just a tiebreaker if neither side has a majority.
