The Shadowlans have been offering support to the Crab for centuries.....but do they take it? Noooooooooo!
Just so you know the whole Shadowlands thing is faked. Fu Leng really did die At the 1st DoT and he can never come back. The Crab just dress up in costumes and fight fake battles to justify their role in the empire. Why else do their "witch hunters" dress up in kabuki?

Folks sure are citing a lot of alternate history around here. Didn't realize we had so many fans of historical fiction. Gotta learn to separate your casual reading from history books, cuz a whole lot of these names people are tossing out sure don't sound familiar to me ![]()

For what it's worth, I'm really hoping that we end up with a forced study of meishodo since both clans involved are my primary choices.
But the Phoenix part of me wants to know the repercussions for banning it.

Depends on if the steel is curved or straight. ![]()

Still, the artifact in the fiction doesn't look rokugani at all.
Considering when they are using that artifact, It's probably very old. As in before the Unicorn return.

Ban: some people rebel, meishodo is still used and someone frees the... Jinn. For now I'm voting for a Jinn. Prophecy fullfils.
Study: some people different from the option above rebel, meishodo is still used and someone frees the... Jinn. Prophecy fullfils.
The end of the road is going to be the same. The road itself will be the interesting and different part. At least I speculate that. I could be totally wrong. ![]()

True. Something from the Burning Sands, probably.
Someone mentioned Iuchiban but for when he went to the Burning Sands, the Unicorn had left long ago. The artifact could be a "recent" find though as the Unicorn could have reopened communication lines with the Burning Sands, and make Iuchiban a thing, And that assuming Iuchuban happened here and did the same stuff.
But the name of the fiction screams Jinn.

I find it somewhat strange that one of the options is to straight up make meishōdō illegal. The Unicorn might have the thematic of holding on to their own ways, but they usually aren't the kind of clan that outright disobeys the Emperor. It seems like that could potentially eliminate an interesting aspect of the setting. Unless, of course, meishōdō becomes a secret practice (which seems quite likely), or it is later proven to be safe and the ban is revoked (which I hope they don't go for).
I'm probably worrying about nothing since I'm sure the story team have given this a lot more thought than I have. I just hope meishōdō is around for a while, in one form or another.

I do think the idea of Unicorn being forced to practice in secret could lead to really interesting stories and could possibly lead to strife within the clan. It could also lead to them as a much more stubborn clan down the line as well, having been forced to give up something uniquely them.

At the risk of hijacking the narrative, I hope to see Iuchiban again. Not now but on down the road.
He deserved a much better third act than he got. And unlike other s he could be played subtly as a hidden threat rather than 'Immortal Evil Wizard!! Grrrr!!

I do too. I was really excited for Iuchiban's return but it felt like it turned into a training montage for Daigotsu to outdo him.
I do hope that there's a way that doesn't split the Phoenix and Unicorn playerbases with this narrative. At least one that isn't outright war. Save that for beating on the Lion.

For certain. If it becomes illegal, maybe secret meishōdō cults could come into contact with secret maho cults , which I think could be interesting, particularly since the Unicorn probably aren't familiar with it.
Sure it could lead to the Unicorn thinking it is another unjustly banned practice and maho poisoning meishōdō, and thus another "the Unicorn do magic wrong" plot. But it could also lead to the Unicorn outing the tsukai and a different origin story for the Unicorn magistrate tradition (which would also be a good way of taking up Phoenix "territory" as a kind of revenge).

Well if meshywhatsis gets outlawed, things will probably get ugly for the Unicorn. With the Phoenix AND the Lion wanting a piece of making the Unicorn 'comply' with the emperors decision.

As players, we need conflicts or the game would be boring. And having constant outside threats would be silly. From that point of view, I'd hope for players not taking it too seriously. Today enemies, tomorrow who knows.![]()
Speaking briefly for the scorpion, if you make it illegal then all you've really done is switched it from a unicorn power to one of ours

The part that really has me curious about it is, there seems (at least from how I read it) a definite interest on the part of Kaede, and by extension the Phoenix, to accommodate the ban of meishodo directly and without the need of reinstating a Jade Champion. But maybe it's just a vested interest in not being "replaced" in managing the empire's soul.
