I dunno if somebody noticed, but it looks like Rokugan survived an invasion from the Burning Sands and another from the Ivory Kingdoms (from the sea no less!), with both repelled by the Lion Clan, most likely on Rokugani soil. Interesting reveals, I must say.

Surely the Spider........I mean Ki'Rin/Unicorn didn't know what they were bringing back with them. They were just cut off from the Kami and needed a way to perform magic to survive......I'm sure it's all very harmless and on the up and up.

Either choice looks like a win for the Shadowlands. Either ban it and piss off the Unicorn and push them back into the loving arms of their little brother Fu Leng. Or allow it in, only to find out the Unicorn are not really the Ki'Rin and Fu Leng has tricked the empire for 200 years and is now ready to strike.

At least that's what I got out of this.

Internal fights? Steel sharpens steel, the Lion weed out the weak among the clans they fight, keeping the Empire strong! Then, when the enemies of the Emperor come, the clans are ready to fight with the Lion in the vanguard.

i am curious what spider and crab players think of all this - unicorn, crane and dragon should stand together (but who knows, that seems to be the intention) and Lion and Phoenix should! oppose (amusing if any Phoenix winners vote to allow the Unicorns to continue) so Spider and Crab are potential deciders (allowing numbers equal blah blah blah)

Yes.

Does a maho version of meishōdō exist? Could that be what is happening?

Maybe upon returning to the empire meishōdō started attracting kansen, like the once pure Isawa blood magic did. The Unicorn didn't have problems before because they didn't need to ward off the kansen, maybe because they were farther away from the Shadowlands or because Fu-Leng doesn't care that much about other regions.

If so, maybe name magic could be reworded to specifically leave out the kansen.

Listen, the Crab fight the enemies of the empire to the south. The Lion fight them everywhere else and do a little fighting on the side when there are no empire enemies to fight that we can get to. We couldn't just march through Crab Lands to fight their shadowlands creatures, I heard the Unicorn did that this one time and it turned out poorly. So they should, of course, join the Lion in opposing this May-Shu-do junk. It's probably tainted anyways.
