THIS. FFGs absolute silence really irks me...

Maybe they're waiting for a specific time to address the community's concerns - say, at something like a massive, high profile gaming convention which they're a partner for, where they'll be making multiple announcements for all their games and which also features their annual in-flight report and the North American Championships? Something like that, maybe?

Developers already did the yearly interview for 2017. All the softball questions have been suitably half answered for the season.

Here's to hoping. Will GenCon be the savior of X-Wing? Stay tuned!

Well, at this point I really doubt they're going to make any changes until after the North American Championships. We definitely might see a few afterwards, though.

At the very least, there's going to be plenty of talk with and from the devs in the next two weeks; let's see where we're at after that.

House rules will never overtake the official game. No matter how "bad" the official game is.

Team Fortress > Quake
Counter Strike > Half-Life (Heresy I know, but sales, active players, and money made are clear indications that the mod of the game overtook Half-Life by far. And ironically Team Fortress mitigated first to the Half-Life engine, just to become its own more successful game as well.)
Dota > Warcraft 3

Though I think something like this would be unprecedented in the tabletop genre. Party because game mechanics are not protectable and thus any successful mechanic would end up in the main game sooner or later and the other big part is that without tournament support you have a hard time to sell that idea.

Now HotAC gets away with the tournament support by simply introducing a cooperative game mod, but for establishing a new form of standard play you would need to get TOs interested to host games based on your rules, so basically you need TOs who love your game version and don't have a direct business relationship to Asmodee, i.e. TOs from Clubs and other organisations who are not store owners. Those exist, but they are rare as most of those events seem to be driven by thousands of FLGS.

Honestly, my hope for the "Alternate Rules Initiative" (ARI; anyone? Anyone?) isn't so much that it supplant or even compete with FFG's rules, but rather than it get enough traction, and become high-profile enough, that FFG can't continue to react glacially to the problems with the game that so many of us perceive.

I was involved with Dungeons and Dragons Miniatures, and though it does limp along, it just barely limps along. (Though, ironically, Wizards killed DDM themselves -- aside from the ongoing efforts -- by forcing a Version 2 on us, and Version 2 was terrible.) Whether there are a few counter-examples or not, I'm pretty sure a rules-set officially supported by FFG is -- all else being equal -- far superior for the health of the game.

I wouldn't worry.

A) The forum is not the game.

B) If the game starts to seriously decline in sales and number of players it's not necessarily a terrible thing.

A) Thank God for that!

B) More cheap 2nd hand ships!

Oh, and I agree with all your points :)

Both Warhammer Fantasy Battles (when it was around) and Warhammer 40k had independently developed "balance mods" that were used by some major tournament circuits.

Anyone who thinks the player base can't succeed at making a better game should also check into the history of blood bowl. It's a really cool story.

Actually there's s completely independent ruleset for warhammer fantasy called "9th Age" (8th edition was the last before GW nuked it from orbit). It's picking up quite a bit of traction. It's essentially the same game as 8th edition was but with more streamlined rules and massively toned down magic phases and death stars.

It's one of the more popular games in our shop, with between 2 and 4 tables going every Tuesday. I haven't committed time to it yet, as I'm apprehensive of community driven games, but it's been a few years now and it's growing.

Yeah, I've been eyeing 9th age hard, but I don't really have anyone to play with.

also needs to make the jumpy less stupid so more ships have a chance to shine

I agree with this; my personal feeling is Gun for Hires is a good thing as it gives scum more viable options outside there 3 good ships.
