Ranking the Rebel Ships

By Crabbok, in Star Wars: Armada

Like I said, I have a purely dumb vain aversion to the AFMKII... if I were truly objective about it's balanced value stats, it's probably is the best Rebel ship, & if it looked like anything else, I'd probably own four, & Ackbar Spam with the best of them... but as it is, I only own 1, it was the last ship I went to buy, & I only did so because it was next to free with an Amazon lightning deal.

So if the inevitable MC-75 turns out to be close to a AFMKII but with a little more Squadron value to make a Rebel counterpart to the new Imperial Quasar, that could easily become my favorite Rebel Ship... and round out the number So Crabbok can have his True Top 10 List.

Now I want to see one painted like that. Sadly my skills are not up to that challenge.

Can i be honest i kinda like the look of the AFMK2. Kinda looks as if it fits the mon calimari asthetic, but only in the way that a chop shop could do it. So i kind of imagine akbar sitting there looking at the dreadnot saying the following, " Yeah its ok.... but you know what will make it great? Take the bottom off a nebulon and put it on there. Wings itll need those, so that way you can fly it right up thier ***. And no i dont care that there is no air in space to make the wings make sense. Chop the back off and put the biggest engien you can find on there. ONLY ONE THOUGH! If i find out you put more than one the only thing you'll hear before you wake up two weeks later in the med bay is, 'It's a slap!' Did i meantion that it should be round, not too round mind you. Think pleasantly oval. Got it? Good! Have it done by friday."

I didn't care for the looks of the AFMK2 when it first came out, but as time and games went on, it grew on me. I kinda like the way it looks now.

I don't hate the shape of the AF2... I just wish it were very slightly smaller. It looks a little bit disproportionate to everything else.

Gah, 18 is so cheap for one of those, i kinda want one. I'm SO bad at painting though.

Plenty of people who'll do it for you for Cheap ;)

You know i would really like to see an afmk2 like ship but basically swich from broadsides to front. Now that i think of it i would like a medium base liberty style ship. Try and make it not too crazy make it crap for squadron value.

If looks are the only thing holding you back, you can always buy a replacement Assault Frigate MkI from Mel's Miniatures that looks much less like a space potato.

Don't think I don't have that in my wishlist all ready, I'm just waiting till after GenCon to make sure the 99.9% chance we're indeed getting a MC-75 pays out. Not much of a gambling man even with those odds.

I wonder if they'd cry foul at a major tournament if you used a different model. Obviously you can paint & make minor mods, but how far would they let you take it?

It's not allowed in a tournament, although with TO approval you can always sidestep things like that. I wouldn't count on it, though. Still, it would be fine in casual games, which are the vast majority of the games most of us play.

I honestly don't really get why so many people hate the MkII so much. I think it looks fine, and in fact it's probably even among my favourites. The MkI is horribly ugly though.

Aye, the space whale is a classic. Here in the UK we have ugly concrete car parks from the 70s that are listed/protected buildings because they're such a good example of horrific architecture. I reckon the AF falls into this bracket - so ugly its kinda cute :D Save the whales!

I've gone to Regionals where people used alt models. Typically they'll ask you if you're ok with it, and they bring the correct model along just in case.

I guess as long as it's a tasteful swap, nobody is going to be a jerk. Unless they legit have a stick up their ***.

.My disagreement with the list was Hammerhead(s), and that may be the difference. I think having them Second to last as a singular ship isn't far off but in multiples is where their strength shows. Task Force Antilles can be very hard to kill and Organa can maximize their dice rolls if flown well. I also want to fly one in a list with Garels Honor and try flanking with it and coming up behind the enemy fleet to take out Flotillas. I have seen Garel used far too aggressively so far and think a new look at tactics is in order.

Not a bad points - in groups they are certainly stronger - being able to leverage their titles and stack up the attacks, or even defense. But I think that's part of my problem with them - even though there are two in a pack - they seem to be designed to work in groups much larger than two - so in order for them to shine you'll probably going to need to buy multiple packs.... and that kinds brings it down in my list - because it's limiting the effectiveness. Like - CR-90s can also work well in groups, figure 4 of them each with a TRC and Intel Officer... they can be REALLY nasty - but at the same time, a single CR-90 still fits great into any list.

It's subjective of course. The Hammerheads haven't have the strongest showing yet, but I'm thinking they still have a place at the table for sure.

What if you make it look like this? :)

I seem to remember @Vykes had an amazing looking whale as well.

If I could make it look like that, I would probably start some form of WarHammer back up. Beautiful work.

Well I didn't do it, this blog is someone else's. But I may wanna copy that colour scheme to my whale :)
