Time to Quit??
So, we have burnout, NPE, meta of doom, and published pain as our monthly blog selection.
There have got to be addiction recovery and post-partum depression websites that are more chipper than this. . .anyone want to explain to me why we should even be playing this game anymore??
Edited by Darth MeanieIve stopped really caring after I took a 2nd place at a local SC with two x7s and BD. I put in my time
Now it's mostly a social experience
Because
In the midnight hour she cried, "Pew Pew Pew"
With a Rebel yell he cried "Pew Pew Pew!"

The women.
Don't despair! Showing our cards a little, but: @MajorJuggler, myself, the S&V team, and other prominent community members are brainstorming now a Community Edition that should keep those little plastic spaceships in play for the next 20 years. There is still a lot of pre-planning to be done, but when we're ready to open things up it'll be with the following goals:
- ensure that these little plastic spaceships retain both casual and competitive fun value beyond FFG's license with Disney
- incorporate the community's opinion and perspective on what the game should be in a data-driven, participatory fashion
- have first class software support (builders, information browsers, community forums, etc)
I totally agree, it's definitely time for the podcasters to quit.
edit: @Darth Meanie , take a telegram. "To: Scum & Villany Podcast. Congrats stop. Have found only podcast in world less interesting than yours stop. Name: Carolina Crates. stop. Signed, FTS Gecko stop". Oh, and put a P.S.: "Please, please, please... stop."
I kid of course. Never listened to any of them.

The Trench Run is one of my favorite scenarios . . .
It's pretty ugly if you listen to all the hate online. Our local meta is very diverse, but still very competitive. There is a lot of creativity on our tables, even in store champs. Yes we do have a few meta-wingers, but they are good to see how the other stuff stacks up. A lot of our top tables have very unique lists on a regular basis, which is healthy for our local community. Yes it's a smaller community (20ish regular players?) in a smaller city, but I think we have enough variance to do well. Some of our members have even attended worlds, USA regionals, system opens and have done very well against the competition with their unique lists.
That being said we have had discussions on the impact of wave 11 and while a lot of us are having fun with it, there are a few who are pretty grumpy about the new synergies that are just becoming boring and disgusting (myself being one of them). Luckily we have such a great local community that you don't see Furrshiprebels every second table, or paratanni all over the place. We want to have fun!
On the flip side, I'm personally getting a little burnt out from the negativity in the podcasts. I still plan to practice up and play in my first regionals this comming season, but I I will be trying to ignite Imperial Assault this fall for something to distract from the pain and suffering that X-Wing is experiencing.

A sincere thank you to you guys for putting this together. As this is my first miniatures game, and I feel like I arrived rather late to the party (jumping in with the Force Awakens Core Set), all the doom and gloom in the community recently has me worried about my investment in this game. I love it, I'm still having fun, and I think my local meta is really healthy and growing. Something like this would put my mind at ease that there will still be people to play with after official FFG support begins to decline.
Edited by WAC47One thing Blair said that I totally agree with: the emphasis of the game should be on the piloting. That feeling of being rewarded for plotting a smart move that gives your ships an advantage over your opponent, or those a-ha moments where your opponent hits you with a move you didn't expect, is probably the best part of the competative game. I feel like some of the upgrades and combos recently have pushed things away from that a bit.

Epic play.
Heroes of the Aturi Cluster.
Missions/campaigns (ffg or mission control).
There's tons of fun to be had when you change the parameters away from the overly analyzed and highly tested 100/6 meta.
I'm glad all the focus is on 100/6 though -- if there was more official support for alternate formats we would inevitably have the same people who mathwing 100/6 do the same to all our other games.
Edit: reading the community edition stuff brings me more hope yet. I have invested a considerable amount into this game and I love to fly when it's fun. Keeping the game alive beyond what ffg is willing to do is awesome news.

It's not just that we can support the game long after it's dead, we can create a significantly more balanced and diversified meta game than FFG can. Yay X-wings!
Edited by MajorJuggler@Darth Meanie: Are you judging our book (podcast) by its cover? (episode title)
Did you listen? Maybe we're talking about two different podcasts.

For me at least I wouldn't say it is time to quit. Rather it may be time to quit purchasing and buying into the latest shiny.
It is just my taste and I know some feel a game won't sell if it doesn't have constant revisions, upgrades, power creep, FAQ, etc. Perhaps they are right, but that just isn't my kind of game. If they sold the cards separately then I would be more inclined. But I don't want all these new little toys, I don't play in tournaments, and I prefer simpler upgrades that are more common on the table. Great game, not really well balanced, but if you cut most of it out you have great Star Wars theme that is both fun to play and easy too.
Oh if MajorJuggler is right and there couple be balance to the game! That would be even better.
Not time for that. Times are dire. If the whole community is t expressing that it's easier to ignore. If volunteer (or paid) playtesters are visibly unhappy, volunteer podcasters are audibly displeased, and some of the big names stop showing up, and sales slow it's very hard to ignore your games' state.
Add in a community effort to "make it better than you did" and either we get the 2.0 we created or they make drastic changes and we get a better product. Both are win win if you can hang on.
DND minis game is only community created at this point and has lived on like 8 years post Wizards support. I bet xwing can do better and live longer.

Part of me would love it if FFG just said "screw it. We'll just continue making beautiful models of Star Wars ships, you guys make the rules."

Well, if they did announce they were giving up support, then I wouldn't mind getting the last couple of waves for the cards. At least then I'd be done. ![]()

Because HOTAC exists and it does a really great job of recapturing the wonder of the game while also bringing the players together against a common enemy rather than pitting them against one another.
We've lost several people from our local group because they "don't like the direction this game is going". The feeling seems to be shared across the Xwing community.
I've only been around for a few waves so can someone tell me what the 'right direction' is? Or even describe the 'peak' of Xwing, before we went down the wrong path?

Did your thingy with X-wing math2.0 whatever evolve into this? I heard about it on the S&V podcast today and was really surprised. It's great that it's getting more serious now, didn't know how it was turning out~
On our latest episode of SoT, we did, in fact, talk about NPE'S, but we did not talk about all the different lists and archetypes that make the game/player experience an NPE. Instead, we break it down into the psychological aspect of how is something an NPE.
If new a player really enjoys the idea of combo-wing as opposed to a veteran player who is used to playing with minimal upgrades with all the flying being in the dials, who has right to say that combo-wing, in itself, is an NPE?
If someone enjoys a particular aspect of x wing, whether it is, heavy jousting (FSR 2.0), arc dodgers, fat turrets, or TLT spam, or the tactical side of it in manuevering and dials, then they might not see it as an NPE. What is enjoyable to one person may not be enjoyable for another, and that goes for all games. The point being, we all have our experiences and we bring those experiences with us into each wave and have a certain expectation of how our experience will pan out for the future wave (right now, it's wave 11 of course). You have to change that expectation coming in and being willing to do so.
just my two two cents on the matter. I try to stay positive about this topic, but I do share the same concerns as others, and I hope this can lead to a better discussion on the matter.
