Did Gunner set a precedent? Luke Skywalker and Baze Malbus

By FraGGer224, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Hi All,

I want to clarify a ruling, one that I know was addressed in a FAQ in regards "Gunner" but not other similar cards.

My plan is using Miranda with twin laser turrets and Baze (or Luke Skywalker).

So first TLT attack = Hit

2nd (roll 1 less die to regain shield) = miss

now I missed an attack and am able to perform a primary weapon attack against another ship.

Gunner states following

When using a secondary weapon that says “perform this attack twice”, both attacks must miss for Gunner to activate. (X-Wing FAQ, Version 4.2.1, Updated 07/01/2016)

Now gunner was updated within an FAQ clearly stating that both attacks need to miss, so was this purposely missed out on the other 2 cards as Gunner has set the precedent or are you still ok to use the abilities as mentioned above. I feel like if Gunner set the precedent any current and future card should also be addressed for this

TLT is now one attack you perform twice. You need to miss both times to trigger Luke, Baze or Gunner.

Check the Attack Timing flow chart in the FAQ.

Yes, Gunner set a precedent. That's generally how rulings in this game work. They don't include multiple rulings for cards that are worded the same way.

Twin Laser Turret followed more of the Cluster Missile precedent, not the gunner precedent. However the interaction between cluster missiles/TLT and Gunner set the current precedent where we have now.

As for Blaze it isn't exactly like gunner. To be honest it is difficult to get to work because switching targets after you missed isn't exactly a winning strategy. The only way to make Blaze good is to scatter an effect like tactician but in then you are trying to miss your first attack so you can move on to your second attack. I am kind of upset that they don't let you split double attacks but I guess that is what area of effect attacks are for and I can see it being frustrating to the other player after you kill a ship you get to attack another ship.
