Please review and critique. I don't see the answer

By bobby_neill, in Imperial Assault Skirmish

Hello. Please take a look at my Grand Inquisitor list and tweak? I am stuck on making it work as I feel it puts out the necessary damage. I just keep losing but a point or two in skirmish games. I also keep not killing models by a point or two. I believe it is in the command cards, but as far as I can tell the deck seems solid. Maybe its just the luck of the dice, mostly probably it is probably inept play. Are Inquisitor lists like this viable in competitive play? I have a store championship coming up at the end of August. Thanks for any kind advice.

If you are trying to make this more competitive, let me ask one question first:

"are you married to the list and won't change any figures out ?"

there is a magical number of activations and figures which equals amount of damage and ability to capture objectives, kill opposing figures and control the board i.e. Win a skirmish game. You may be the best player in your realm, but without certain tools, you'll always have a hard time winning the match even if you get close. Your has some great pieces, and some great command cards but is missing some key ingredients to push you over the edge. What other figures do you have available? The biggest problem I see is that the list is starved for figures and activations. You have several great individuals, but together they don't make an army and are not cohesive. Melee works sometimes, but generally takes a backseat to ranged attacks, and you have more Melee than most. The snow troopers can heal themselves but not fast enough to keep them alive and they have no synergy with the other figures in the list. You also have no method of drawing cards faster or in greater quantities and you have less activations than average and less figures, so when a bad roll happens it hurts way more. Finally, you're stuck with what you roll, you have no way of modifying your dice or enhancing them through beneficial conditions such as focus and hidden.

No I am not married to the list. I have every expansion and every hero and villain. I have two core sets. I was in love with the inquisitor, but he is just not up to snuff. BT also seems to be underwhelming also. I'm not even married to the Imperials.

No zillo will be painfull. Maybe try something like this. I tryed inquisitor when jabba's palace came in, but without any greater results. Howewer with bt-1 and hunter cards it MAY work out.

Deployment

  • 7Elite Jet Trooper
  • 7Elite Jet Trooper
  • 9▪ The Grand Inquisitor
  • 6▪ BT-1
  • 7▪ Captain Terro
  • 2Imperial Officer
  • 1▪ Zillo Technique
  • 1▪ Rule by Fear

Command

  • 2Squad Swarm
  • 2Call the Vanguard
  • 3Assassinate
  • 3Grenadier
  • 2Heightened Reflexes
  • 0Take Initiative
  • 0Planning
  • 0Celebration
  • 0Element of Surprise
  • 1Negation
  • 2Force Surge
  • 0Force Rush
  • 0Mitigate
  • 0Positioning Advantage

I'd defintely say that list is an upgrade from the previous. eJets are extremely strong deployment groups. I'd make sure to add Overrun and Fuel Upgrade for them as well. If you have to swap cards for them I'd get rid of Squad Swarm and the 1 point force card. I don't remember if it's Surge or Rush.

I also generally prefer Urgency and Fleet Footed over Mitigate and Celebration but that's less of an issue. Celebration always feels very "win more" to me and I've yet to see those four points matter in a match. Mitigates single reroll is nice for when BT or the Jets dice come up cold but often the extra movement can help you set up plays and attacks that otherwise wouldn't happen. Especially because eJets really want to be in that 2 range mark for Fly By.

Yeah it's REALLY painfull, however it's not unbearable. Actually ATM I run 1 Jet with TC, 1 Jet with cross training and plain BT-1 and it works out. TC Jets are heavy hitters and CT Jets are cleaning service. Problems I see with BT without TC is mostly salvo and range, cause his normal attack damage is quite consistent (42% for 6 70% for 5 against black die). The problem with the empire is, that if you put too many points into upgrades, you run out of options for deployment groups, because they lack reliable 4 (however I found rJets to be REALLY good addition, because of their synergy and Grenade/Overrun/Shared Experience, but I wouldn't call it reliable) and 5. If your run Zillo 3tcs and rule by fear (which I put in as a replacement of BT's TC and I find it WAAAY BETTER - especially if you draw planning or shared experience - for painless discard - round 1)

The other thing is, that if bobbys list has to include Inq (and jets, terro and bt-1 are IMO autoincludes), you just run out of points :(

I don't see Terro as an Autoinclude. For the rest I'm totally on your side.

Maybe not auto include but defintely the best available option aside from eJets right now. Imperials are sorely lacking diversity when it comes to deployments that are worth running.

Also eJets run fine without TC. Yes their dice can be swingy but the opportunity cost of running it(Zillo and RbF) is extremely steep. Either that or you end up with 4 points in upgrades. Neither are good options but I always roll without the TC and it's been fine.

LOL... This thread shows 10 replies (11 now) and 0 views. So, I guess people are just writing and not reading.

My thoughts:

Snowtroopers hit like a wet noodle. BT1 is unreliable and squishy, and Vinto needs to be focused to ensure he gets his hidden-train every turn.

I'd keep TGA (9), Shyla (8), TA (1), and swap out the rest for Terro (7), eJets (7), Onar (6), and an officer (2).

The enemy won't know who to prioritize!
