ah right the 2 and 6 are the problem. Thank you
FAQ and Tournament rules
Should have made the Terrain limit 8 so that you can fulfil the requirements from a single core.
Clarified Lord Hawthorne's build ability. The rearrangement is done after Army Building AND Defining the Play Area (which I presume means after placing terrain).
I'm on the fence on this one. Obviously, if the core had a tournament legal distribution, that would be great.
But at the same time, the core isn't a tournament-in-a-box set. It's also only 100 points -- if you want to play in a tournament, it's a given that you'll need to buy expansions. All this news does is mean that, unless you already bought two cores to bulk up your forces cheaply, one of those expansions is an Essentials pack (or a hero -- after all, 2 2-tray and 2 0-tray terrain pieces is legal, let's not lose sight of that). And if you're filling your 200 point list exclusively using expansions, you're already taking the route that declares "money is no object to get me the units/multiple copies of upgrades I need", so I don't think that "but I have to buy duplicate tokens" is really a winning argument from that standpoint.
Not to mention, the core was already an ENORMOUS value for volume to price; I can't believe that of the "lifestyle" gamers likely to be serious about tournament play, this wasn't something they'd already done or planned to do.
So I feel like I'm willing to give them a pass on this one. When you look at it from the standpoint of giving us a well-balanced 100 point game in a box, the core fulfills the mandate. As we've seen in, say, Netrunner, sometimes that means you sacrifice a little bit to get there. I support FFG's stance that their core business is board games, and their core audience is board games. When they take a risk on an LCG or miniatures game, they're looking to convert their core audience to try out new game types, rather than poach GW's or PP's market wholesale.

Incorrect, defining the play area is step 2, before determining first player, so before anything in game is done.

But if you are going to a tournament this basically means you can redefine your formation before every game? WOW.

I believe it had separate rules for.tourny v casual, so don't think so. Don't have the doc on my phone.

It is separate yes. In the tournament, I believe this arrangement is completed before the tournament begins.
EDIT: Actually, I was wrong
From FAQ:
QuoteLessons of Seragart is resolved after building armies and defining the play area. In tournament play, this ability is resolved before game setup.
From tournament regulations:
QuoteGame Setup
The following steps must be performed before players can begin their game each tournament round.
So Tournament Setup happens first. Then each round you have a "Game Setup" for each game. This would lead me to believe that you would use Lessons of Seragart before each Game Setup. So why doesn't the FAQ for Lessons of Seragart just say that? I dunno, but if it was only once then it would probably have made more sense to say that the effect occurred after Tournament Setup or even before Tournament Setup. But then, I'm guessing that most people won't be changing it between games anyway. Usually it seems like you have one specific unit in mind when you use that ability.

Yea this is the long version of my reasoning. If "Game Setup" happens before each game then you get to Hawthorne to a different formation every round (if you choose). What's interesting about this is you never play tournaments in a vacuum. Friends/other gamers and looks across the room will give you an idea of who is playing what.
Would I ever change my 4x1 cavalry back to a 2x2? Probably not, but would I change my 2x1 Rune Golems to a 1x2 if I see something I dont like? Maybe.
