Oracle system for L5R

By franzvong, in Legend of the Five Rings: The Card Game

FFG just announced Legacy of Dragonholt, the first game for the Oracle system:

Most of all, it is not about winning or losing, but immersing oneself in a narrative of your own creation, and presenting players with a living and ever-changing unverse. The Oracle system does this by capturing the immersive storytelling of a roleplaying game without the need of a game master.

As a long-time masterless rpger (mostly due to a very small rpg group - 3 players) I'm extremely interested in this system, that could be great for stories taking place in Rokugan.

Hopefully FFG will release also some L5R adventures for Oracle too!

What do you think?

I'm not a huge fan of FFG's Runebound setting, but the Oracle system does sound pretty neat. I'll probably buy it just to try it out and see how well it works. I really like that it doesn't appear to be solely focused on tactical combat like many similar products. Also I see no dice in that shot of the components, which makes me even more interested. I'd be 10x more excited if they announced this same product in either the L5R or Android setting.

Are they going to be previewing this at GenCon? Do we know?

Hard to say. It hasn't even been added to the "Upcoming" page yet for status, but the news article says release should be Q4 2017. With a release that close, I would think they would be providing some sort of demo, or at least display of it at Gen Con. But that's just me.

I agree, I am interested, so I plan to keep an eye out. My group likes co-op games that don't involve traitors.

No GM? Those systems are pretty interesting, but usually end up more interesting to look at than to play. That being said I would be very interested to take a look.

I tend to disagree, but depends what you are looking for in an rpg. Combat and min-maxing are clearly less interesting, while the story and narrative are usually pretty fun.

We use Microscope to create the setting, Fate as a rule-system, and gm-less online tools for the generation of answers to feed the narrative. Lot of fun, unexpected (obviously) twist to the plot and generally pretty consistent narrative. We already agreed to use the same once the L5R rulebook will be released, but if Oracle proves interesting we may replace Fate...

Oracle seems very book driven. I suspect it will be something like running through a Fighting Fantasy book with a group of people.

Or one of those Choose Your Own Adventure books from back when.

"if you go left turn to page 74"

"if you go right turn to page 53"

There are a series of books called Fabled Lands that are large and sprawling. Each book is a separate area and you can move between them when you are at the borders.

Just play Zork?

I heard about some new online version of zork, but based on what I heard, it isn't as good because instead of describing the stuff that happens, it just tells you die roll results and raw statistics, which can be kind of breaking for more immersive text systems like zork.
