Steel Squadron August - Hot Takes for the Hottest Month

By BiggsIRL, in Star Wars: Armada

Okay, actual effort post:

We've had a pretty good month for posts that kinda petered out towards the end as I went back to work. Shmitty is on leave from life because it is summer. Truthiness continues to provide quality over quantity.

Hammerhead Corvettes Guide
The Forbidden Love of Lothal - A Fan Favorite!
Corellian Conflict: A Show of Force
Admiral Sloane
Corellian Conflict: Hyperlane Raid
Hondo, Friend To All (and others)
Phase 2: Deployment
Back in Black (Darth Vader AAR) - Part 2 of the AAR (Monthly Best Performer!)
2 Triangles and A Baby (Ozzel AAR)
Konstant Kontact (Konstantine AAR)
A Brief History of Armada
Corellian Conflict: Base Assault
Boarding Teams
Disposable Capacitors

I appreciate the clarity this article provides on the subject.

My feedback is that I felt the further discreditting of Q was not neccessary as the issue was addressed and resolved. I believe that the point could have been expressed without doing so.

I tried to post a comment on the blog, but silly system wants me to have a profile.

Good article.

How did I miss the 'Forbidden Love of Lothal' piece?

Priceless! :D:D

You mean this?

"I want your Big Black Anti-squadron inside my dice pool! I want to fondle your Cluster Bombs at the same time your Advanced Projector removes the shields from my rear hull zone!"

I would say I was going to make an effort post later... But let's be honest.

Biggs I think its time to bump the "Community We want to be" post, or write a refreshed one.

The luckiest thing that's happened to me in a while is steering totally clear of Q's post (The title with NOVA didn't grab me so I didn't read it at all until it was locked.)

I've been slacking lately. One more CC article is coming. In the meantime, I'm heading to one last Store Championship:

Nice fleet truth. The EH/FC pocket carriers list has been on my docket for a bit, but I sort of zeroed in on trying to do it with leia. I think the Vet cap is an elegant solution.

Sneak peek of the AAR: I hate Hammerheads

This your first time using them?

No, but I keep tricking myself into using them.

Maybe it needs to be the title.

Yeah, I'm still learning HOW to pilot them. So far I've learned a lot of what NOT to do.

Best I can figure is Scouts with DTTs, TFA, and General Leia. When I'm making that list, though, I ask myself why?!

The Scouts have some strong competition from the similarly-priced CR90A. I'm not saying there's never a time when I'd choose a Scout Hammerhead over a CR90A, but it's tough going.

The Torp Hammerheads seem to be doing fine, though. External Racks and Task Force Organa and done is a cheap little packet of pain when you want a blob of discount bin Raiders.

My problem is that the Raider is so much better in that role. Yes, it's 51 points vs 40, but those 11 points are a much, much more worthwhile investment. That brace goes a long way toward keeping the Raider alive at close range. It can also operate independently, unlike TFO HHs.

My own preference is also the Raider, but the Raider being 27.5% more expensive is a good thing to keep in mind, especially given how Raider-style tactics are more effective the better you can play the activation game and Hammerheads can bring more of their own activations for cheaper. The Hammerhead also has the upside of actually doing something (not much, but still) at long range, having a redirect, and having more inherent hull. Raiders are definitely more durable at close-medium against dice pools unlikely/incapable of rolling an accuracy, but against an accuracy result, Hammerheads have a slight durability edge for cheaper. Of course Raiders have the upside deadlier attack dice from every hull zone (being superior to a Torp Hammerhead in every regard once the attack is at medium range or closer).

The trouble is getting the task force to be a net positive. With a small group (say a pair), it's easy to blank the card by killing one of them. With a large group it's tempting to keep them close to 2+ other Hammerheads so the Task Force can be used more flexibly and can't be sniped out so easily, but you can produce a blob of tightly packed Hammerheads that are easy to maneuver around (for their cost/number) and are much more susceptible getting plowed through by a big bad with Gunnery Team.

From what I've seen, I've had better luck with them either by Engineering or Navigating. Yes, I'd love to concentrate fire with Leia at long range, but navigating seems like a much better proposition.

Out of four games with the Hammerheads, I've had one Cham assault boat survive long enough to do its thing to an ISD... on turn 6... and the ISD had Wing Commander anyway...

I took out my frustration on poor @Maturin today. He was the first victim of my re-tooled Madine Madness that is re-optimized to be both second and first player during the impending Avenger bidding wars. TRC90s with Engine Techs are so wonderful...

I had forgotten what Madine+engine techs+CR90's were capable of. I walked right into that one, much like a baby seal approaching a sealskin-clad man and asking "can I help you?"
