Lords of Winter Expansion Announced

By evilsponge, in 1. AGoT General Discussion

Maybe Greyjoy will get just a deluxe expansion as every other house. I see the Greyjoy expansion more as a "Mini Coreset" to bring them into the game.

I hope Castorp is right. To avoid that martell and Greyjoy are "behind other houses cardpool" I'd like also for them themed Expansions!

Yeah, why not? happy.gif

On the topic of future big expansions, I think there's an alternative to giving each House its own extra set. I could see a House of Thorns expansion with Bara/Lan cards for House Tyrrell, for example, or a House Arryn expansion with neutrals that have particular synergy with Stark. I think introducing new themes for houses that lack them (particularly Stark) could be done in this way, rather than just vanilla expansions for each House.

If it hadn't been for the set coming with deck lists for a Tully deck, I wouldn't have been surprised if this expansion included a number of House Bolton cards, including reprints from the House of Thorns set. In that regards the set would have aided both Stark and Lannister, and possibly other houses as well (I used to run The Bastard of Bolton OOH in my Greyjoy discard deck). As the set is announced, however, I doubt we'll see many, if any, dual-house Bolton cards.

The other thing to keep in mind regarding Greyjoy and Martell is that with this release it doesn't put them any farther behind, just actually puts Stark ahead of all the other houses. When they get through the other 4 houses, if they choose not to address Greyjoy and Martell as well, then they will again have a smaller card pool. But a part of it also is what cards get reprinted. Although I personally hope that they don't reprint anything in the Deluze expansions that is currently available in the LCG card pool, it still remains a possibility.

Considering that we don't have any problems ordering the older CPs from our distributors, there shouldn't need to be any "hunting down" of the older chapter packs just ask you store to special order them for you. If they can't, well, I'd say give me a call, but there are plenty of outlets to get the cards.

I suspect we'll see a reprint ratio in this deck similar to what Sea/Sun had. The thing I really like so far is that each expansion has 7 new plots, and plenty of cards for other houses to use. I just wish that there could be some repackaging for the Greyjoy expansion; at least Martell isn't so bad, if you can find a friend to buy a second one with.

I would hope that the next expansion is for Targaryen. Lannister has some great builds, and Bartheon is getting a solid footing with some fun and fast decks, but Targ seems to need the most help after Stark. Plus, their Dothraki is already a useable theme and the game seems to be getting more tribal effects (I wish we had a better name for than for this game), so the Dothraki move into that slot perfectly.

I wouldn't be surprised if there were about 15-20 reprints in the Stark deck, especailly with the plots. And I hope we get more of the traited plots. In fact, I think this wuld be a great set to bring back another type of traited plot OTHERS! So far we have Fleeing to the Wall all by its lonesome. Bring back Others plots, whether they be new ones or reprints. Whose Name May Not be Spoken and Blue Eyes, Black Skin could be fun, possibly even Wraiths in the Midst. We don't need the uber Winter Has Come, or even Sacrificed to the Others (unless they change it to "choose an opponent" type text; that would be wild). But I'd like to see them come back.

I'm curious what overall sales have been like beyond the core set having sold out. That is certainly the gateway for a new casual, boardgamerish audience, but CP's original introduction letter when "Winter Came" talked about preserving some collect-ability by not reprinting chapter packs. Thus far, most tech against themes has been falling within the same chapter pack cycle. Without rotation, this does not bode well for a tournament environment.

On the subject of reprints, I'm happy with the current make up of the chapter packs (I did a breakdown below...) especially since the newer players are only really aware they're seeing new cards. I will be curious to see if they keep providing a smattering of OOH cards to "balance the metagame." It is a bit of a pain for someone that's not playing the house to get cards if they have to break down and trade for one if it's not what they're collecting, unless there are good neutrals/plots/events. I actually find the choice to go "3 of" a little obnoxious, since the middle ground was a nice... middle ground. It was crappy to force someone to buy 3 Core Sets or Premium Expansions to be competitive, and finding someone to split a 2nd copy wasn't too bad, but this kind of hammers the guy who's just buying one of each. And the change mid-cycle is a pain, on the upside, we can be happy to know that FFG is responding to input, and should continue to provide our feedback.

KotS:

2 new attachment (Seafarer's Bow & Pirate Marauder), 1 unchanged.

11 new character (Dagmer Cleftjaw, Priest of the Drowned God, Stowaway, Jack of All Trades, Godswood Attendant, Ten Towers Honor Guard + 5 New Kings/Queens w/ 5KE art: Robb, Joff, Robert, Myrcella & Viserys), 5 changed (Balon & Victarion were reworded & gained keywords & crests, Theon changed phase, Shadowcat & Sisters gain Shadows crest), and 10 are unchanged.

2 new event (The Price of War, Assault of the Kraken), 1 changed (Kingsmoot changed phase and draw), 4 unchanged.

3 new locations (Shivering Sea, Bay of Ice, Kingdom of Shadows),1 changed (LIV gained draw), 7 unchanged.

0 new plots, 7 unchanged

PotS:

2 new attachment (Locked Away, A Pinch of Powder*), 5 unchanged.

5 new characters (Doran Martell, Darkstar, Sarella Sand, House Dayne Reserves, Former Champion*), 4 changed (Red Viper & Arriane gain crests, Ellaria gains Vengeful and can respond to any challenge, Joffrey loses crest), 9 reprints + 5 ITE multihouse unchanged.

3 new events (Scheming on the Sand, Red Vengeance, When I Woke...*), 8 unchanged.

1 new location (Dorne), 2 changed (The Old Palace stops stealth, Tower of the Sun stops renown), 6 unchanged.

0 new plots, 1 changed (Red Wedding became Power Struggle), 6 unchanged

The Others plots would be an interesting return JJ, and they wouldn't even have to be the older versions. The return of the Widlings & Night's Watch has me keen on whether we'll see any reprints or all new incarnations of the old traited cards. (Oh what I wouldn't give for WED Mance, or even the original Promo version... and Dolorous Edd to kneel that jerky, Core Set Jaime). On with the show, I say.

I think they should update the core set next round and add in reprints from Clash of Arms. I think the "To Be A" Series and the Fury plots are all but required for a starting player.

Then again would people be all that annoyed if Lords of the Winter had 3x To Be A Wolf and 3x Battle of Whispering Wood?

Does this mean slotting in the GJ/Martell versions of those cards in the core set, or leaving them aside until a 2nd GJ or Martell expansion.

In case of "To be a wolf", personally I wouldn't. But others would for sure. People want new stuff.

I got better idea (I mean better because of greater probability to happen). Players could vote for best cards (Condemned by the council, The price of war, To be a ..., Varys, Syrio, Milk of the poppy etc.). After voting we would have list of most wanted cards - those that players would willingly buy. Then FFG could print special deluxe pack with those cards 60x1 or 40x1. So anybody could buy such pack x1, x2 or more if they like.
