I did this for a while, with the same issue--the table was 3' wide but like 5.5' long. The mat I play on is a yoga mat (so, full 3x6 mat instead of two 3x3), so it flopped over the ends.

We just scootched the mat to one side or the other as needed. Very rarely will you be using the whole mat at the same time , so this works as a stopgap.
