A few questions for fairly new players

By Fethah, in Star Wars: Armada Rules Questions

Please note that the group I play with plays casually and just battle each other.

Question 1a) Can Gallant Haven reduce total damage to 0 if the damage dealt was only 1? 1b) while using Gallant Haven would the brace defense token be used before or after the card?

Question 2) When using Darth Vader tie squadron against a ship would a crit count as two hits in the end, with the crit being one in itself and then the card adding one on top of that?

Question 3) When using MS-1 Ion Cannons(" blue crit: Choose and exhaust 1 of the defenders upgrade cards") if you roll multiple crits are you able to use each one to exhaust different ship upgrades instead of using them as standard crits?

1a) yes

1b) before. Spend defense token, then reduce the remaining damage

2) he has a black die, so if you roll a crit it's always a hit/crit. That means two total damage (1 from the hit symbol, 1 from the crit symbol). Both face down though, since he doesn't have Bomber

3) no- you can notmally only resolve one crit effect which in this case is "exhaust one upgrade card". There's an upgrade that does allow you to use two crit effects (fire control team) but they have to be different, so you could exhaust one upgrade and still do one face up damage for example (as long as you have fire control team on your ship)

But, if you roll the regular crit side would that not count as two hits? One hit with the dice itself then one hit added on top at the end with the card? " While attacking, each of your Icon Dice Crit.png icons adds 1 damage to the damage total"

No. Normally a squadron without bomber ignores crits entirely, so a black die crit/hit would be one face down damage. Vader doesn't allow you to do extra damage, he just allows the crit symbol to add to the damage total when normally it wouldn't. Basically, his ability is a poor man's version of bomber when attacking ships. The reason he has his special ability and not just the bomber keyword is that he can do damage with crit symbols to other squadrons, which nothing else can usually do

Squadrons without Bomber do not count the "Crit" Symbol normally. They ignore it completely. So a Black Hit/Crit Die would be "Hit" for one damage if it was someone other than Darth Vader.

Darth Vader counts "Crit" as "Hit". Which is half of the benefit of Bomber. becuase he still does not have the ability to resolve a critical effect.

What Odomir is getting at, is that there is no "Just Crit" Side on a Black Die.

1 - Blank
2 - Blank
3 - Hit (One Damage)
4 - Hit (One Damage)
5 - Hit (One Damage)
6 - Hit (One Damage)
7 - Hit + Crit (One Damage Normally, 2 if you're Darth Vader)
8 - Hit + Crit (One Damage Normally, 2 if you're Darth Vader)

Right! I forgot. Only on counter attacks though

It still counts! :D

But yes, its a very rare ability overall, to have critical symbols count for anything against Squadrons :)

Ten Numb also want to beg to differ, he too situationally can deal damage out to sqds with a (blue) crit, although that's more a collateral damage thing on the unfortunate bystander sqd, than the sqd under direct attack
