Why does this list work?

By MrMaggles, in X-Wing Squad Lists

I'm a huge fan of the Decimator but in the current Meta it doesn't fare too well, so I decided to go down the less used tankier version of the Deci, here is what I've used in test matches at my local club and so far it's undefeated...

The Hound & The Mountain (99)

Commander Kenkirk (60) - VT-49 Decimator
Expertise (4), Inspiring Recruit (1), Ysanne Isard (4), Rebel Captive (3), Engine Upgrade (4)

"Quickdraw" (39) - TIE/SF Fighter
Expertise (4), Fire Control System (2), Sensor Cluster (2), Special Ops Training (0), Lightweight Frame (2)

Kirk plus Ysanne the combo of choice for a survivable Deci, surprisingly tanky almost tripling the Deci's survivability

and the Standard QuickDraw with Sensor Cluster for a bit more survivability

So my question is, have I just been lucky or have I struck Deci gold?

Its a solid 2 ship list, but its by no means unbeatable. To my mind, its the sort of list that can really excel against opponents that you manage to outmanoeuver to limit the incoming fire on your ships. While they can stand up to 1 or 2 shots per turn, once they start taking heavier fire, they go down much faster than you'd like, regardless of what upgrades you have on them. If opponents so far have not been able to put all their guns on target turn after turn, then I'm not surprised they lost (unless your meta is inundated with 2 ship lists---then I can see it coming down to raw dice---and since you have pretty much fully modified shots with both ships every turn, enemy 2 ship lists would need the same in order to compete).

My only input is for Pattern Analyzer in place of Sensor Cluster. Sure Sensor Cluster can help you be defensive but the ship has six red moves, Pattern Analyzer really opens up the dial and allows you to choose any maneuver...which helps you outmaneuver your opponents and limit the incoming fire he takes and thus, hopefully, preserve his pilot ability (or the threat of it) for as long as possible. Plus, with expertise, you're 100% unmodified if you decide to take a red maneuver without Pattern Analyzer (and sensor cluster wont do you any good), at least with it you could have a focus token to modify...

Personally I treat Pattern Analyzer and TIE/SF Figthers the way I treat Advanced Cloaking Device and TIE Phantoms: it is an auto-include.

Sensor Cluster has always seemed better as an option on the Upsilon to me, since it means focus tokens guarantee an evade on green dice, and the Upsilon in general has awful PS (topping out at a whopping 6). Also two tech slots, so it can take it AND pattern analyzer.

Yeah I would use a pattern analyser if I had one, it's one of my next purchases when I get more money lol...

i have a local tourney tomorrow gonna take this list see how it fares against competitive lists ?
