I am just trying to make sure I have everything right in my head going into this. From what I remember, we get one (1) core set and are to use the deck building rules listed within the Learn To Play book. Looking at those rules, am I correct in that we can optionally decide to use the roles cards? Only difference being that since we are using 1 core, our min deck size drops from 40 to 30?

As we understand it, yes, this is correct. Normal deck building rules, except only 30 cards in each deck. More clarification probably later today during the L5RLive stream, as they will be talking about GenCon.
