I've been watching through Star Trek: The Next Generation, and EVERY ambassador the ship ever carries to an important negotiation plans...to improvise when they get there. If it works for the Federation on a regular, scripted basis, I think we'll survive.

Maybe. The writers of Lost had a plan about where the story/series was going. It was so obvious that I guessed the series' end by the second season.

What constitutes a "plan"? Isn't a plan just "This is what I will do when the situation arises", and in the case of saying "I'll just improvise" you have the most complete plan possible, since you have an idea what you will do (which is Improvise) to any contingency.

That isn't a plan. That is just what you will do. Plans still have details and goals.

Plans can and should have improvisation, but improvising itself isn't a plan. And just saying you will improvise isn't a plan either.

You can both plan to improvise and improvise a plan. You can also plan to have a plan. I don't think you can improvise to improvise... that just seems dumb.
