Return to Runebound

By Rashley, in Runebound

I bought this game many years ago and quite enjoyed it but never added any expansions as the 2nd edition had come out and I was worried my 1st edition wouldn't fit. Buying a whole new 2nd edition seems wasteful, so I am enquiring if it is possible to just get the new mapboard, as that was a major change. I believe all players start near the middle instead of the bottom right corner which seemed an advantage to earlier players. However, if there are other significant changes, I may have to 'bite the bullet' and splash out for a whole new edition! They aren't thinking of a 3rd edition soon are they? Any help or suggestions will be appreciated. I hate waste, but I do have plenty of other games to enjoy to fill my gameing time and needs.

Cheers

I haven't played 1st ed so I can't really answer that part of your question. I gather that they're pretty similar but there are some important differences.

As far as a 3rd ed goes, there hasn't been any news of such yet. I don't really know if there will be one or not, it's hard to say.

You'll likely want to bite the bullet as you say and get 2nd edition. In addition to the cities being moved around (and icons changing), several encounter locations now have a starburst "refresh" icon that replenishes the counters whenever an event card is drawn.

Experience counters have gone from +1s to +2s, and the challenges have all been beefed up. Also, the characters have had their stats adjusted as well. 2nd edition is much harder on the heroes than 1st. Also, all the expansions are for 2nd edition; the only 1st edition expansion has been gone a long time.

If you don't care about getting expansions, though, you should feel free to keep playing 1st. It has the same RPG feel to it, and I was fine with it before 2nd edition came out. FFG did provide an "upgrade" discount for 1st ed owners in the US when 2nd ed was first published. It involved mailing in one of your hero cards as proof of ownership.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the replies. I was expecting the 2nd edition to be a bit more different than just the map, but I thought I could ask. Perhaps a few more games with the old set to see if I still wish to continue. If I do, I can always give 'hints' around birthdays, christmas etc., and maybe a new 2nd edition copy will come my way with a few extras.

You cold also email FFG to ask about that discount Torbal mentioned. I seriously doubt that it's still being offered, but it can't hurt to ask right?
