Mechanical Ressurection: The Catch?

By Xisor, in Dark Heresy Gamemasters

I've tricked/enticed/allowed one of my players to undergoe full mechanical ressurection. (Largely thanks to discovering an Archaeologician Heretemple aboard Solomon Haarlock's The Glorious Retribution ) The trouble is that I can't really think of a sensible way to...add in some catches and tricks. Obviously there's insanity, corruption (Assessor's [Perfectorators] doing the dirty deed, not techpriests) and unexpected statistic modification, but I'm thinking engrammatic programming and so forth. One is giving him an Indecipherable Algorithms trait which vaguely combines the Vendetta and Failsafe Control (e.g. Speaking his warp-woven true name might grant 'admin access' to his bionics...) traits. Any further thoughts?

Have to say, it was rather fun getting him to go for this. At first he was categorically against it (and had to be Compelled inside the machine when investigating the Heretemple as the Assessors appeared). Then I appealed to things like becoming more powerful. More capable of doing his missions. Saving the one he loves . (Another PC, now NPC as the player got a bit bored, had their characters 'fall in love' [and sleep together within a day or so of having seen the Tyrant Star, young love, eh?], so appealing to his ability to 'sacrifice' his character to save her makes some sense.)

It was fun, light roleplaying (as it's PbP), but I think the player faced some serious trouble in coming to a decision. Was it worth it, what would the consequences of not doing it and so forth. Surprisingly enjoyable for both me and him, and it didn't even (necessarily) involve immediate mortal peril!

Now, the question remains: any suggested catches or ideas you'd had in mind for harrassing players who want a full MR?

(Just wait until our psyker who ended up trapped in someone else's body [fate point burned to avoid death during a Vice Versa peril, so the fate-burnt result was simply that the NPC bought it instead! You're not a woman, you're a man, baby!] finds out my suggested plan for returning her to the original [some many hours after its death!]. Functional Magnetic Resonance Replicator: scan the 'new brain', get the old body, implant a good Bionic Brain [thanks, Assessors!] and why not just undergo the Proteus Protocol too!)

Yes, I realise I might be being a bit liberal with the Solomon Haarlock was into absolutely everything ! It's a fun one, and I'm trying to rescue the campaign from an uncharacteristically rubbish stint from the last GM (Soviet grot kommissar-led uprising, Magical-Virgin worshipping crucific-bearing hullghasts?! Oh my...)

Aehm.... do I get it corrected that the pc wasn´t dead/on the bring of death as the "operation" begun?

Yes, that's correct! But he was in vague mortal peril.

(I.e. he'd been poisoned and had 12 Fatigue[!], basically 'on death's door', and it is a very dangerous ship...)

Okay, got it :)

First of all, I think the negatives from the package itself are "punishment enough".
Second, I would not implement this "Robocop-Type" hidden triggers/switches. They have been used once to often.

But....since he lost his flesh VOLUNTEERING...how about a form of insanity that shows that he is somehow regretting/rejecting his choice?

"The longing for the lost touch of flesh"
Whenever there is a chance to "touch" another ones flesh, he must make a willpower check to do so. He might restrain himself suiting to the situation (i.e. talking to a young women in a formal occasion, he just might touch her hand for a polite kiss...but let go of the hand much to late and "carassing" it much to longlingly).

The debased think is that he is MACHINE and cannot feel at all. But WATCHING himself touching flesh makes him remember....

This will have no immediate game effect...but played out by the player mightl give everyone a (suiting) feeling that is a mix of "feeling sorry" and "being VERY uneasy"

I have a player in my group that ended up with the full cyber-rez package after having a most unfortunate encounter with a krak missile.

Besides the hefty insanity points levy that comes along with it you have several other "catches"

1) Healing. Yes, you regenerate with this package. SLOWLY! You also cannot be treated with the medicae skill anymore. You will eventually bounce back from non-fatal damage, but not anytime soon.

2) Water. You lose access to the swim skill and replace it with the rather dubious "sink" skill....

3) Vulgarity. Quite simply, this character is now vulgarly obvious. You are NOT a normal pedestrian. You are NOT the substitute delivery guy. You are NOT anything other than a combat cyborg, and EVERYONE looking at you knows it!

4) The Vader Factor. You now have the chemgeld and disturbing voice traits and your Fellowship stat has been literally cut in half. For an "average" character who started with a Fel 30 you now have Fel 15 and a further -10% penalty when interacting with anyone who might find you disturbing, which is nearly everyone.... On the positive side, you get a bonus to intimidate now.

Congrats! You now make the team's Techpriest look fairly subtle. (maybe)

So, you're looking for unexpected complications to go with the cyber ress, as I understand it, right? First thought is to take a look at some of the Phaenonite stuff in the Radical's Handbook, if you have access to it, particularly Maltek stalker. Other than that, a few ideas come to mind:

-First of all, this isn't much of a secret, but this guy is now basically walking Tech-Heresy, right? You could make this obvious to a greater or lesser extent, but either way, he's going to have to be VERY careful around Ad-Mech's

-As far as hidden programming goes, you could consider giving him a Violator Implant (RT, page 152) to do the kind of stuff you're talking about.

-Though this may not be a drawback, which is what it seems you are looking for, you could give him modifications or cybernetics he does not know about himself, which may activate instinctively. Imagine his surprise when being startled by a cat results in a gout of flame erupting from his forearm, for example.

-I really like Gregorious21778's idea for a psychological disorder. Conversely, he could go the opposite way, and either be repulsed by flesh, now that he has found a more enlightened form, or be obsessed with upgrading himself, swapping out for ever better parts.

-Finally, if you want to be REALLY REALLY MEAN, you could have a failsafe Melta-Bomb implanted in his chest. Just a thought.

Cheers.

Perhaps you should just stick to what makes the character tick. His motivation is to save his love. He sacrificed everything, even his own body and maybe even soul to rescue her.

What is more fitting then him allowing to succeed in rescuing his love, only to let her go the good old fashioned. "Eeek a Monster" bit, perhaps with her ending up dead in the end? Now that is good old tragedy. Give him the insanity Gregorius suggested and he is in for some serious heartburn. THEN and only then bring in the deamons and other stuff to push him over the edge if you want to.

I think the psychological effect is the most important one. He wakes up in a body made out of steel, his flesh long gone and he will never enjoy the fine taste of Obscura again.

Terror hits him as he realizes that it is not possible to reverse the horror he has inflicted upon himself and regrets it dearly, perhaps even driving him towards suicide. Thus forcing him to make a WP Throw every 1 hour to check if he looses his mind, -30 on all skills for X amount of time as he is blinded by hate and rage of his new body.

Given that you stated that you Tricked the PC into the rebuild, I would be pretty careful about any 'surprises' you put into the rebuild, as it may just piss them off.

As has been pointed out the rebuild comes with some pretty massive disadvantages already. I'd go with Sister Callidia's suggestion, it would make for some (potentally) great roleplaying. :)
