The Auzituck and its 270 Degrees of Firing Arcs

By Astech, in X-Wing Rules Questions

The most bizarre question has popped up at my FLGS. My opponents have determinedly insisted that the Auzituck's firing arc is not, if fact, a 180 degree arc, but instead 270 consisting of two sections:

1. The front, standard firing arc.
2. The entire 180 degrees of the 'rear arc'.

Despite the preview article explicitly mentioning the 180 degree arc, there's the problem of the rules for reinforce tokens stating that a token assigned to the fore section works whenever the attacker is in either primary or auxiliary arc, making it absurdly good.

Can somebody make me feel better and show me definitive proof of the Auzituck's 180 degree firing arc?

I'll have to look at the reference card that came with the ship when I get home, but I bet this is something like what happened with the YV-666.

Quoting myself from another thread....

It's all about the diagram being confusing. The diagram is meant to point out the aux arcs only, so they have one color and the front arc/all non-arc spaces to the rear have another color. People look at it and think it's meant to show you all the places you can shoot, and since they start from knowing you can shoot straight ahead, assume that the "this-is-not-the-aux-arc" color is the "these-are-the-places-you-can-shoot" color.

Ask 'em why the "fore" version of the Reinforce token protects you against ships that are behind you, but not just slightly to your right.

The trouble is that on the Auzituck firing arc reference card, the rear 180 and primary arcs are shaded the same colour grey, whereas the proper auxiliary arc is the only non-coloured part, hence the confusion.

Aha. So it is the same situation as the YV-666. If the reinforce token argument doesn't convince them, ask them to point out on the aux arc reference card where it says anything about the primary arc.

And point out the extra arrows on the Firepower symbol on the pilot cards, and how they're not pointing aft.

And the shading on the base chits.

And that they're dumb.

Maybe not that last one.

...and another thing!

Another option may be to use another reference card to help explain the graphic in the Auzituck reference card.

This TIE S/F Reference Card also shows the auxiliary firing arc as the only non-grey section and it is pretty clear it is referring to a rear firing arc and not, everything but the rear of the ship.

Nah; I'd definitely point out the last one. The longer I play this game; the more I discover there is an awful amount of stupid lurking around.

I could live with it if it was just a single player, but every single person at my FLGS is convinced f it...

You have to find and convince Dumb Zero. Then the thrall Dumbs should revert.

Graphic on the card is identical to the YV666, which has a 180 firing arc.

Seriously what is with people fighting this thing having an 180 firing arc? Nobody has any issues with the yv666 and its the same exact thing both printed arc and icon on the attack value.

People had (probably still have) exactly the same issue with the YV.

start running hlc moralo/dengar nym then using their rules. they'll learn pretty quick...

Edit: and if you want to be really mean run him with zuckuss, 4 lom and inspiring recruit. Assuming they are running jankyard biggs cant use the granted evade, has to reroll 2 defense per shot as long as you can get arc with your green dial...... and nym, he dont care anywaycoz it's either 2 hits or a bomb.

As opposed to the true rules where fore version of the reinforce token protects against ships from the side only if they're completely over the line making the fore bigger than the aft on a square base.

Still less nonsensical than "fore == aft".

might I suggest referring them to the visual firing arc and rangebands in the images in the preview article?

Seems like a solid option to convince them it has a front facing 180 degree arc.

That, and the line in the article that says "Although the Auzituck gunship's primary weapon boasts a full 180-degree forward firing arc..."

Honestly, I really can't see why this creates so much confusion.

Because the education system seems to be failing. Half or more of the teenagers i know fail at trig/angle basics like this, usually with the excuse they'll never need it in real life anyway............

I live in the land down under, and our maths is fine. It's our reading, writing and comprahenshun that requires work...

As do i, and in my experience they are way too happy to simply pass the buck with kids that are nowhere near ready to progress (also i really hope i see what you did there......)

I know what you mean. Whenever I try to tutor students in maths it's clear that their teacher has mangled the thought processes to the point of exasperation. And yes, you do see what I did there. ;)

Or that the Rear version of the Reinforce token protects you from the sides.

I never fully appreciated the importance of reading comprehension until I got a job that relied heavily on email for communication. I'm pretty sure I could send an email to a couple of my co-workers that just said "My dog is brown" and the next day at work they'd be asking me how my grey dog is doing.
