Is this game worth picking up if I'm completely new to L5R?

By Rozzie, in Legend of the Five Rings: The Card Game

Having been a fan of alot of FFG products over the years, I cant help but be intrigued by this game.

Having said that, do you think this game is interesting and playable to a total newcomer? Is there perhaps some lore reading that would be beneficial?

Thanks!

Absolutely.

Welcome to Rokugan! If *nothing else* then the open play first event will be very casual and friendly. Please do.

Most definitely!

The game itself looks like it should be a great time. And so far they have posted lore for the 1st 5 clans they have previewed. They are starting with a clean slate, so all the Old L5R stuff isn't canon here. It's still really cool if you're interested - but those 5 fictions are all we have so far in the FFG world.

And to second Croy, welcome to Rokugan! :)

Awesome thanks!

Where can i find these previews?

Kolat Informant keeps a link to most of the articles here: http://kolatinformant.com/l5r-lcg-core-set-hub/

It's also a good source of news on the game and Lore in general.

This is a great page! Thanks so much! I'll see you out there...

also look up http://www.kazenoshiro.com/ it contains all the lore from the first previous 20 years, but as mentioned they are doing a Clean Slate, or Alternative Timeline, so do not get too attached to the stories, but you will get a understanding of the lore and setting of Rokugan.

And the old L5R Wiki is also pretty good for lore on the clans and some important characters, but again Clean Slate.

A few notes. THe above are references to story from the AEG's L5R. While it can be interesting reading, it is no longer "canon" (story reboot).

FFG's Product page is a good place to start:

If you look under the news, they have previews and story for 5 of the 7 clans, with more coming in the next 2? weeks (we think).

You have good timing. This is the best possible time to hop on board.

We barely have any new lore to discuss yet, so we talk a lot about the old lore around here. Don't let that scare you, though, you don't need to know all the old stuff to enjoy the new game.

Abso-FRACKEN-lutely!!!!!!

Even the most savvy L5RCCG veteran is going to be a 'new player' so we're all in the same boat. I suggest you grab a paddle and start rowing with us.

Since you have some experience with other FFG games you might actually be better off than the majority of the players without any FFG experience. I played the L5RCCG for 20 years but when I played some test games vs Kiramode, who is an accomplished SWLCG player, it was clear that his experience was more relevant than mine.

If you're interested in learning more about the game I would recommend going to the nearest Rokugani library and requesting a copy of "The Black Scrolls"............Just um open the first one and.......well, you'll see. I don't want to spoil the surprise.

Ooh! I hope they're as good as those big, old tomes over at the Miskatonic University library!

If anything the CCG vets have a lot of unlearning to do.

I know it's been said, but this is the best time to get into the game. Effectively, this is a new game entirely. Sure, there are similarities to the CCG in mechanics and world setting, but this is it's own (great looking) game.

Absolutely it is.

Even better!

Awesome. Some great feedback here guys thanks.

So to dive a little further, since the canon has been wiped, does this mean all new media to go with it (books etc)?

Yup. As of right now, the only things that are canon are the articles on FFG's site.

Yes. It is more than a game. This community is unlike any other competitive group. It is truly a family. Collectively the l5r community has not only been charitable irl, but you will meet lifelong friends. You will travel to their city, and crash on their floor for a kotei. They will do the same. Seriously, this game has saved lives and brought diametrically opposed folks together... Against the shadowlands, if nothing else. Do it. You won't regret your decision.

I'd like to point out that, at this point, we are ALL completely new to this game. So yes, if you're interested, you should totally get into it.
