Mixing genres

By DarthDude, in Genesys

I just learned yesterday about Genesys and being constantly in search of a setting agnostic system it immediately caught my interest. Will Genesys be able to handle a mix of different genres like Open Legends does with Steampunk (Science) and Fantasy (Magic)?

I hope the magic/psionics/powers system will be very flexible. Is there anything known about it yet? Will Genesys be able to handle something like Mass Effect and Biotics for example?

The people that know can't say, so the only way to find out will be either wait for release or wait for an reveal article talking about how their magic/ability system will work, if they decide to do that.

They will feature the game at Gencon this year, using the Runebound setting, which is FFG's own fantasy setting, so we'll hopefully find out more then.

I hope for a real versatile system. I love Star War's narrative dice system. It has to be if it boasts to be able to cover any setting, or every show from The Expanse to The Magicians to Power Rangers or games like said Mass Effect.

I guess the real challenge will be a tremendously flexible system for supernatural powers, be it magic or super hero powers. I hope they won't do just some simple spell lists with expendable slots, rather some system where you could shuffle traits together to mimic spells or powers.

Well, it's wait and see then^^

The most mixed scenario I've known is Shadowrunn. Maybe Starfinder will be even more mixed. Magic, psionics, humans, aliens, cyborgs, robots, technomagic, etc. I believe that Genesys could be used to create something like this easily and it'd be awesome :D

I dearly hope so, as I love the narrative dice system, the talent trees (though a bit more flexible would be fine, often you have to get talents you are not interested in before getting the treats), the way abilities, wounds and stress and skills are handled. The only thing that I can't imagine how said super hero powers, spells, psionics can be handled flexibly. Indie systems like Open Legends or OVA have an interesting take on defining actions over traits and effects. Mechanic wise a grenade wouldn't be that different to a fireball for example. Both are area effects and do a kind of elemental damage.

Maybe there will be a system to allow creating "supernatural" powers with building blocks, that would be amazing. I would so love a system whith which I could easily play in the Mass Effect setting.

Oh, and hopefully there will be a oppulent guideline to create creatures, gear/items, vehicles and the like^^

I know Sembedia would have a cow, and some Savage Worlds people would freak, but you could also do a Rifts conversion, I'm sure.

added an 'm' to the name.

Given that my homebrew campaign setting is in large part a mash-up of Exalted and Rifts, yeah, I'll be doing a Rifts conversion.

Rifts would be great for this system, All you would have to do is come up with different names so there is no copyright. they can not sue over the concept though just the names, there are other names that can be used for the Rifts and nexus points, I would support something like this as long as there is more ideas coming up with this concept, like Rifts where they had the dimension books but really never took off other than once every couple of years. I myself was a big Rifts player/GM and was working on a Dimension book for Rifts as well, but after I work on a Dragonstar conversion, I might even start working on my World since I could use it in my Star Wars game even.

This doesn't seem to have been discussed much, but I'm with you here.

One of the biggest draws (among many to be fair) of the Genesys toolkit will be to implement some of my created material BACK into Edge of the Empire.

As we talked about in another thread, I also like it that genesys has the potential to last longer than the FFG hold on the SW IP, and so I'll be able to take my SWRPG books (when I get out of my current desert of RP) and play with more players.

Sure you can play any game with anyone, but honestly it's harder to get a new group to play a game that's OOP and not D&D... I've got enough books that are in my collection for dust and memories than I care to think about.

Ha. Tell me about it.
