L5R Organized Play News

By Suzume Tomonori, in Legend of the Five Rings: The Card Game

Looks like we're getting L5R Organized Play news "tomorrow," (August 1st in America?) according to Twitter:

Also, replies to the original post state there will be a "ton" of core sets available for purchase at Gencon.

That looks like Clan-Specific Imperial Favor, doesn't it?

I would love to own Clan specific tokens for this game - even more so if it's the Imperial favor!!! ?

How much does a Core Set weigh (FFG seems to make them all about the same)? I want to calculate how many there would be in a literal ton.

Amazon lists the AGOT:2E core set at 2 pounds shipping weight...so 1,000 core sets in a literal ton. They clearly mean there will be at least a couple tons available, otherwise there's not going to be nearly enough. :P

I take it you're from the US, to define a ton as 2000 pounds (a metric ton is closer to 2200 pounds, while a UK ton is 2240 pounds). :P In any case, several tons will be needed.

True, I forget about the variance between the different "tons" out there. Still, assuming they want the 700 inaugural tournament players to get 2-3 copies during the con, that's at least 1400 copies they need on hand. And it sounds like there's a lot of people in the other events who need to pick up a first copy to participate, then the people not in any events, and the people picking up copies for friends who can't come in person...I just try to imagine the veritable mountain of product they must have shipping in for this one game and it's glorious.

...It also probably has a crazy guy with old armor squatting on the top, shaking and gibbering nonsense.

..............Donald Trump????

I was to the understanding that the tournament participants only get one core box with their ticket, but I might be mistaken.

If you click the link above and read the replies, FFG says "There will be a ton more than 700 copies," but we'll just have to wait and see how many that means.

That is correct, and for the tournament decks will only use 1 core. However, for future/competitive play, FFG is saying you'll need 2-3 cores for a full card playset. I'm assuming they'll want to at least be prepared to sell the tourney participants the 2nd and 3rd core sets they'll want/need, as many players probably won't want to wait until regular release when they have an opportunity to pick them up right at the booth. So the 1400 I was counting isn't including what they need set aside for the tournament itself, just to sell additional sets to tournament players.

It'll be 3 core sets for a full playset. 2 Is the minimum you need to build a competitive deck.

What it means is you won't be able to build the necessary 40/40 deck with just one core set.

I think it will be more likely that people will be buying copies to either sell or for their friends (Which is my plan).

2000 lbs is a ton. 2240 lbs is a tonne. :D

The original French spelling, by the way, used for this very unit since the beginning of the metric system.

And actually, a tonne is 1000 kg. 2240 lbs is a long ton, while 2000 lbs is a short ton.
