Honestly, at this stage of the game's life and at this stage of the skirmish game's evolution, I'd say it's not worth it if you won't be playing campaign at all.

Why though? The last two waves have been doling out some impressive command cards that completely revamp entire unit types. Hunter, Brawler, Force User, Spy, Droid etc have some fantastic abilities now. Vader, Han, Chewie, IG-88 just got revamped.

I feel like skirmish mode, while in the middle of growing pains, is on the cusp of being well rounded and full of variety.

I use this imaginary scenario to judge a boxed game. If I was stuck inside a vacation cabin for a week of bad weather with another gamer, would this game, along with limitless junk food and two or three DVD's* be enough?

Yes, we could amuse ourselves for the whole week with nothing but the contents of IA's core game.

The core game has all the minis an imperial player needs. Almost all the minis a rebel player needs. And not enough minis for a merc player.

However. It also has colorful cardboard tokens to use as extra units for all 3 factions. If you use these you will have an embarrassment of riches as the Imperial player. More than enough forces as the rebel player. And just enough forces to play as a mercenary player. In addition to 36 plastic minis you get cardboard tokens of:

IG-88

3x Rebel Troopers

2x Rebel Saboteurs

Han & Chewie

General Weiss, aka, a second AT-ST!

An Imperial Guard Champion

The map tiles in the box will let you design endless battlefields and the command cards are enough for two player decks.

If you buy even ONE of the big boxed expansions (Return to Hoth is best!) you'll be able to use just plastic for all three factions, and yet you'll have even more cardboard choices to boot! Plus you'll get lots more command cards for the decks.

If you are playing at home with a friend or relative, I would go one step further however. Buying the Core game, any big box expansion, and any small box expansion (for a total of $200 USD at my local stores) you could play all three factions indefinitely and not really get bored.

*Y'know. Cause sometimes you just want to put the games away and take a break watching Army of Darkness again.

I should be more clear about the rebels. You DO get enough plastic figures to play them. Just, not enough to keep me occupied for a week of marathon gaming without cracking into the cardboard rebels too.

Mercs get barely enough figures to play, but of they use their lone cardboard hero they can make it. Otherwise, they do have the ability to recruit some Imperials to make up the 40 points they need.

The Imperials in the core box can spare the models too! Gigadam, but do you ever get a lot of imps in that game...
