Question about church of sigmar...

By Vesca, in Warhammer Invasion Rules Questions

My question has to do with how the effects of Church of Sigmar work with forced effects. I was playing the game with a buddy of mine today and ran into the problem of weather the church of sigmar has any effects on cards such as bules force effect.

Church of Sigmar's effect reads: Kingdom. Opponents cannot target your units with card effects uless they pay an additional 1 resource per effect.

BULE's card effect: Forced: At the beginning of your turn, corrupt one target unit.

But how dose that interact with BULE's card effect? I know forced card effects can't be canceled or anything but the rules do not state anything about applieing a cost.. Also if he could not target one of my cards would he have to corrupt one of his own? thank you for any help on the matter.

You would have to corrupt one of your own units if you don't want to pay the resource. If you have no other units in play, corrupt Blue.

Interesting, Empire is gaining points.

The wording of Church of Sigmar brings another question to mind. The rulebook mentions 4 card effects: Actions, Forced, Constant, and Keywords. Since Counterstrike is a keyword, hence a card effect, could your units be protected from Counterstrike by the Church of Sigmar?

If the card states "an additional resource", wouldn't the wording hint to the ability having to have a cost associated with it to begin with?

Bule's Forced does not cost anything.

Sadly no Counter strike is a keyword and not a card effect

So, it costs 0 resource...

With one additional resource from Church of Sigmar, it costs 1.

Counterstrike is a Keyword and Keywords are a card effect ( page 15 ), as such Counterstrike would be eligible for various abilities that specify they affect card effects. In this case though, Counterstrike does not meet the criteria of Church of Sigmar, primarily that it is not a targeted effect. Just because the keyword lets you assign damage prior to the assign damage step in combat does not mean it targets a card anymore than assigning combat damage does.

Applying an additional cost, is just that, additional to whatever cost is already in effect, including paying 0 resources, corrupting a card, sacrificing a unit, or discarding a card from hand or the top of your deck. The word additional is there to ensure that players pay whatever cost is normally associated with the card effect and the 1 resource from CoS, otherwise an argument could be made that CoS replaces the cost, which is obviously not true with this wording.

Thanks, Dormouse, that makes sense. So Counterstrike fails due to its lack of specific targetting. Is it safe to say that a card effect has to say "target" in it somewhere to qualify for Church of Sigmar's protection?

agreed with dormhouse, cf FAQ:

Counterstrike
Counterstrike is a keyword that allows a
defending unit to immediately damage
an attacker whenever it is declared as
a defender. Counterstrike damage is
combat damage that cannot be split
among attackers, is uncancellable, and
is applied as soon as it is assigned,
before any other actions can be taken.

and

Target
Targeting is checked when the card
is played and when the card effect
resolves. A card effect to is considered
to be targeting as long as it says
“target” in the card text.

The word "target" is not in the definition of counterstrike, consequently counterstrike do not target and church of S don´t worlk

More to the point Church of Sigmar fails to apply to Counterstrike. And yes as pointed out in the FAQ ( page7 ) in order for an effect to target anything, as far as the game is concerned, it must use the word "Target" in the effect.
