Boarding Engineers: "Look at facedown damage cards"?

By ceejlekabeejle, in Star Wars: Armada Rules Questions

So this one's been discussed a lot in terms of whether you can flip the same card twice, but I can't find an answer to the following: when it says "look at its facedown damage cards", does this mean that I can find out what the crits are, and select the ones I want to flip?

As an example, I use this with a Hammerhead on a Victory with 5 facedown damage cards. I effectively pick up the cards, take a look, pick two to re-place faceup, and then re-place the others back facedown.

Or is it simply that I pick two of those cards at random and flip them, no knowing what they are?

To some people this might be quite obvious, but it will make a big difference to how I use the card: either way it's good, but getting to pick your cards makes it really powerful.

(The wording for reference: "When you reveal a command, you may discard a Squadron dial or token and this card to choose 1 enemy ship at close range. Look at its facedown damage cards and flip a number of them faceup to your engineering value (one at a time).")

You look at its face down damage cards.

You look at all of them.

Then you flip a number of them face-up.

If you would flip them at Random - then it would state so. The precision Strike objective is one such case of "Randomly" flipping Cards.

This card is one of the reasons why the previous FAQs and Tournament Documents clarified Hidden and Derived Data.

You, as the player of Boarding Engineers, become privelaged to Hidden Information while the card is being Resolved... The Opponent, who is on the receiving end, does not .

However, once the card has been resolved... Boom. That information is hidden again and you have to rely on your Memory to remember what is there...

That's exactly what I thought it was - thanks! I got confused because I read Biggs' blog, which states that it's tricky to use because of the " random nature of not knowing what damage cards are even dealt to the opponent". But, even not knowing exactly what you'll be selecting from, in my view the ability to select makes this really powerful, allowing you to tailor the crits to the ship you're attacking.

Anyway, thanks for clearing this up, appreciated!

Aye pick up all the cards. Then deal them out one at a time till you have played the right number.

About that "one at a time"...

So could I choose a "structural damages" card, flip it, resolve it (dealing one more card), then picking it again (cause it goes to the "facedown card pool") and resolve it twice? (i think not)

Could i choose a "structural damages", resolve it, then choosing another "structural damages" and resolve it again? (i think yes)

Does the card i gave with "structural damages" comes to the "facedown card pool" that i'm holding, being able to be flipped by the same effect?

I think you only grab the facedown cards once, no matter how much you add after that.

Correct.

Continuing on, what is the (one at a time) intended for? on the card wording

To resolve any possible timing issues. So its saying resolve one card completely before moving onto the next

I resolve right after flipping it, then continue flipping? Or flip all, rmb order, and resolve in that order?

flip, resolve, flip, resolve vs flip flip resolve resolve

flip, resolve, flip

You shouldn't have to Remember, you're doing them one at a time :)
