What if certain pilots could fly certain other ships?

By GLEXOR, in X-Wing

Put Han Solo on a Phantom, He's a ghost now anyways ^_^

Not really, if they can't shoot Biggs, his ability doesn't trigger, thus worse than before because he only protects against PS 4-. But a cheap Biggs might just be even more broken, you lose your astromech slot, your useless torp slot, and TL, yet gain evade and BR, plus the ability to get crew and illicit, namely Glitterstim. Just don't equip CT. Personally, I don't fly Biggs, because he is broken and should be fixed, so we can get an X-wing fix without breaking the game.

Sarcasm apparently doesn't translate well into text.

Yeah he would only draw fire from PS 4+.

On the other hand, when up against lower PS targets, you'd have the option to have Biggs perform an attack, thereby discarding Captured TIE and making him a valid target once again. Would be an interesting play vs generics, actually; it would let you do even more of that "defocus fire" that MJ was talking about, just by having the option to not trigger Biggs until after a few rounds of combat.

"Ha ha, you thought your lower PS kept you safe from CT Biggs? Guess again!"

c3po r2d2 ARC-170 Biggs plz

There are several pilots with such insane pilot abilities they're only balanced by the ship they fly holding them back. A good example is Vader. In most other ships he would be crazy good. He is held back by the advanced having an iffy dial and no autothrusters.

Vader in a Defender says hi....

Sabaac in an SF would be mean as well, and given the way his ability is worded you'd have to go through 3 shields and deal 2 cards to stop his +1 attack die. I'd rate that as deadly as backdraft, since while he doesnt have the auto crit out the butt he does have a 4die out the face and 3die splitfires

Nah defender him too to keep his ability as long as possible

Works with Tie/D too!

Though really you could also slap almost every empire pilot in a defender and be better off for it

Pretty much lol. Defender is such a ridiculous platform (even after the "nerfs to the ground" x7 got) that the lack of the insane abilities is about all keeping it from the most broken ship in the game. Ryad is awesome, but the rest are eh, and her PS keeps her at bay.

Double Edge could toubletap his main gun if tractorcannon misses via /D title (two separate "perform primary weapon attack" triggers that do not say you cant fire again)
Tomax for perma crack on a ship that actually has an offense value to mention
Inquisitor for a 4die sniping attack that is actually on a ship that can STAY at a distance.
Juno to basically give it a complete dial (also mini-ryad since 3-5K access, however white instead of green)
Mauler Mithel for R1 deathstrikes (5die ftw). Or Scourge for that matter.
Omega Leader for the maximum trolling.

Any of those would be outright brutal on a defender. And the beforementioned vader obviously.

hmmm...snapshot Tie/D mauler...yum

Rey in an sf, all the rerolls

Double edge in a tied defender, someone already said this but triple shot if he misses

Krassis in an aggressor , reroll for tlt

Vader in a punisher, makes the punisher actually able to do something with its boost and another action

Ryad in an upsilon shuttle, k turn on a 4 die ship, enough said

Inquiz on decimator, 4 die circle

Countdown in a Decimator.. if we insist on being silly.

Anything with a crew slot.

Hello Weapons Engineer!! :D

Unlimited Powweeeeerrrrr!!!!?!

Or, indeed, Dark Curse in pretty much anything that's not a TIE fighter.

To put a bit of perspective on this:

  • Star Trek Attack Wing (the other flightpath-based game that was totally original and not a slap-dash copy of X-wing at all) did have Captains as separate entities from their ships (with elite upgrades hung off the captain).
  • This may or may not have lead to balance issues directly, but was pretty much a minor speedbump in the train-wreck of balance issues that game had (if you thought Jumpmaster's were bad, I invite you to peruse the un-FAQ-ed rules for the Borg and Voyager*).
  • It's worth noting that despite giving you theoretically more combinations (by letting you take captain A, B, or C on ship X, Y or Z) it actually reduced variety, because all you ever bloody saw was Jean-Luc Picard (at Skill 9, 2-actions-per-turn, Elite the game's carbon-copy of Vader) on everything.

* Just as a taster: Voyager with Transphasic Torpedoes and appropriate crew can deliver a 15 attack dice secondary weapon attack that also reduces your defence roll by one.

you pick your pilot and your ship separately, which calls for some overly complicated game mechanics

What's so overcomplicated about it? You already pick a ship and then fill half a dozen customization slots for it. Pilot would just be one slot more. Pretty sure at some point they'll come up with a new type of slot anyway, since they've done that constantly (salvaged astromech, tech, etc.), so it's not really a matter of complexity.

good god that would be so dumb lol.

Only way to actually kill the mofo would be stress stacking the **** out of him. And even then just slap triple Inspiring Recruits so he can dump 4 stress a turn LOL

It would only be dB if he could use countdown more than once a turn, without Yorr pulling stress it wouldn't be that silly

You're joking right?

Decimators or any higher than 10hp ship tend to only go down if you hit them REALLY hard or the game is drawn out as they have no defense other than raw hp.
Countdown would completely negate 1 incoming attack no matter how heavy it was. He would last significantly longer than a normal decimator does.

Countdown doesn't completely negate the attack, the deci would still take 1 damage. It would last a little longer depending on the opponents ships

He might as well negate it - against Fenn, a Ghost or Rey you're still taking 5 hits or so down to one. On the other hand, I think the most broken you could get on a decimator is is Omega Leader:

Omega Leader [decimator] (65 points or so)
Predator
Weapons Engineer
Palpatine
Engine Upgrade

Countdown's got nothing on a ship that simply negates your opponent's dice forever.

Miri in a ghost would also be something

Lt Blount in anything that can mount an ion cannon or turret.

rhymer in an aggressor or any ship with a turret
