As a witness, I can attest that this was the most hilarious unintended $30 expense ever.

I knew this situation sounded familiar, but there's confirmation :P.

Drink lots of water, take a snack, sit when you can, and have fun! I went 1-3 in my first ever tournament (my 1 win was the bye) but I still had a total blast and was completely hooked at that point.

A list you've flown a lot will always perform better than picking up what the "meta demands" the night before.

Regardless of combos, the better pilot makes the game. In that vein- go get them, have fun!

You dig through a lot of the unnecessary PGS nonesense in his posts, he often has one good line of info that isn't bemoaning how anyone who doesn't play broken stuff is playing wrong.

If winning is what's most important, then taking a proven list is the best idea. If winning and being original is important, then fly something which you have found to be effective which is not as proven. If you don't care so much about the result and get a thrill simply from seeing your favorite ship/character on the mat, then fly whatever you'd like.

You know I was wondering where the type of conversation tactics and temperament was comparable to. I figured this new guy is just an old troll with a new skin, especially with the name.

Fly what you want, but if you don't know what you fly, you won't stand a chance. Be it meta or jank. I usually stick away from meta list and that has served me well over a career of tournaments for this game. Sometimes it bites me, sometimes it carries me to victory. I recently took a 2x /SF and /ag to win a, small all things considered, local SC. In the current state you could easily fly something fresh because stuff hasn't settled.

The big bads to watch out for though are Dash, Nym, Dengar, Miranda, Quickdraw and possibly Assaj. If you know what to expect from them, you will have a fighting chance.

Dengar is the only one i havent flown against. All i know from watching matches and reading is you want to stay out of his arc.

You know someone is giving you good advice when they put meta in scare quotes and tell you to purposefully fly bad lists.

i have flown the "meta" bullcrap a whopping 10 times in the 2 years ive played this.
Yet i routinely crush the vast majority of players that only play the "meta"

And the reason i put it in quotes is because it changes from place to place slightly and tends to heavily shift each wave (or faq)

Closest thing to meta i run is Backdraft, but ive flown him since day 1 LONG before he was considered anything more than trash.

Nothing stops you from playing the meta lists when you actually know how to play. Literally only going "Whats the next netlist thats owning?" will get your butt kicked.

Well we had 24 show up and out of towners drop in. Lost to a crack swarm with howlrunner. Flew my firespray poorly and lost him first round only to get tabled a few rounds later. 2nd game, i got tabled by fair ship rebels 2.0. It was a great match against a good player. 3rd round went against Dengar, Fenn, and a naked z95. Tabled him for my first win. 4th and final against Backdraft, Quickdraw, and kestal. Tabled him to go 2-2. All in all a great day and had a blast flying today!

Edit: Put me at 14th. Not at all disappointing for my first event and only 2 months in.
