3D printed energy tokens

By Corto, in Runewars Painting and Modeling

Given how unsatisfying the cardboard runes are to cast, I have created a 3D printable version that has a lot more heft and is quite nice to cast

runes_supports.png.a9489523b1f34240392331b444de02b6.png

It prints quite easily on a standard printer then the supports come off easily

Finally paint them and seal them and you have some good runes to cast

You can find all the files on Thingiverse

https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2457384

If you don't have a 3D printer, any printing service will be able to print this for you, please note you only have to give them the "Runes with supports.stl" file

If you can come to the excellent IBuyWargames store in Woking, UK then I'll print a set for you - it will only cost you a game

Nice job, and they look good in the flesh

Look pretty good

I've been keeping an eye out for 3d printables for this game, so thanks !

Edit: I've printed off a set successfully, but I couldn't get your STL with the supports to work. They broke free far too easily and I had the print fail twice.
I took the individual files, stood them upright and turned on auto-supports and got it first time.

Just a heads-up for whomever prints them next ! (wanhao i3 plus)

Post-print notes

OK so all my apologies for I had not mentioned that the supports were not meant to replace the auto - support in your slicer, but to complement them

I found that the runes fell when printed just with auto supports so I added some additional ones to ensure good printing. Good to know that you could get a set in the end

can anyone print these and ship them for a cost?

I can do that, where are you? I'd charge a euro/pound/dollar/whatever + shipping - this is not a commercial operation

My printer is not the best so you probably have a local service that would do that better than me (something like shapeways or other) and might be no more expensive with local shipping

I'm in Lincoln, NE I'll have to look around, but I know of no place locally that makes things with 3d printers.

@Wraithist

i've been contemplating getting a 3D printer and youre making me want to buy it more...
Same issue i always have though is its difficult to judge if its a good one for the price, since so many are "Cheap 3D printer!" and its so bad it cant even print a sleeve very well, or feels waaaay overpriced for its printing specs.

Well @Vineheart01 , I know you're in Lincoln. You buy one I know a few people who will be wanting some Acrylic pieces :P I tried to get UNL to do it for me, they charge 4x cost and have a mark up on cost. They wanted like $39 per Energy Token set. @Wraithist and I said no thanks!

Basically.

When i was attending college at SCC we had a 3D printer for about a week to play around with. That particular model was pretty lousy (it was prone to cooling too rapid due to being open to the air, thus bad prints were common) but it really enticed me as a wargamer. Terrain, lots and lots of terrain!
Been looking for about 2 years. Best i can find is about 500USD (forget the specs off hand) and my only reason for NOT getting it is i found it through an ad on facebook lol.

i'm also an electrician by trade, so being able to 3D print my circuit cases would be VERY FREAKIN HANDY since thats the main reason i dont do any personal projects...properly encasing them....

i'm just so afraid im goin to dump 400-800 on a printer and hate that printer. I have the income to not put myself in a bind doing that but i still dont wanna shaft myself lol

And if i did get it i would basically just charge material costs for friends. Which is another trick you gotta pay attention to, some printers are cheap for what they do but the catch is they MUST use THEIR material spools, and they arent cheap.
It would solve so many issues if i get one. For instance, Startrek Ascendancy not giving you enough Production nodes (or mineral tokens) lol.

edit: found it, http://www.robotshop.com/en/m3d-micro-3d-printer-red.html?gclid=Cj0KCQjwub7NBRDJARIsAP7wlT_rmuaV5eHuhOLblTnhTOIpTbGNeEPJ5DvoFTFfg3Dvug7qNW8On0QaArhSEALw_wcB#Specifications

300USD not 500. The fact that i originally saw this on a facebook ad makes me not want to risk it, but it looks promising (and it says 3rd party filaments accepted which is a big one)

They look very nice, but 3d printers are still inaccurate. Can it be sanded before painting?

Best thing about that is if you don't like it you can always sell it, you may lose a little on a resale but not too much if it's brand new...

I've found a ton of great stuff on Facebook Marketplace... My freezer, my table, chairs, my dog...

Printed some at my house.

Check out your local libraries. We have "maker" spaces here in the libraries in Arizona, not a place known for their public spending, and they have a 3D printer that you can get access too if you go to a training session.

What's a Library?

Ever looked into getting a laser engraver/cutter?

I honestly don't know if it's comparable in price to a 3D printer, but you could certainly make plenty of acrylic tokens for you to give away or sell.

A legitimate laser cutter (not laser engraver) costs about as much as your typical personal-sized 3D printer. While it would be better for tokens obviously it lacks much use outside that.
edit: unless you are the type that can get creative with 3Dpuzzle type stuff that is.

You aren't really printing acryllic pieces, and they will be much much coarser. If you want to get into making tokens, a laser cutter is a better choice. The things I could do if I spent the money on a laser cutter.

You should check if there is a maker space in your local area. They usually have 3D printers, lasers, CNC routers, lathes, etc. for non-commercial use.

given the 200$ sign up fee, and 100+$ a month for use, I've passed on the maker's space/carpentry shop/tool library near me, unfortunately. Something like 1600 for the first year and 1400 after that ?

That sucks, the one in my city has an open night every week.

I wanted to use it for like a month to make a table, lol. so 400+ $ plus my materials just to use their freaking table saw and clamps. No thanks.

So i did end up buying a printer. I figure i got enough reasons for it that dont need the insane detail quality so if i didnt get the specs right on my first adventure into this hobby oh well. Its already given me a very well done xwing maneuver/card tray so im happy about that lol.

Tried to print these but i think i need to wait on something this small until i get this printer working properly. Tried 3 times, twice the **** thing drifted slightly (apparently using a raft helps with that...live and learn) and third time i tried the flat runes w/o the structures...the bottom half was unrecognizable lol.

I bought some acrylic tokens on eBay.

They look great.
