Barrel Rolling off an asteroid via Advanced sensors

By TheJustWiseSage, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Was playing a game earlier this week and I'd used a tractor beam to put my opponent's scurrg onto an asteroid.
My opponent's front guides were such that if he was to move off normally he would of had to roll for the asteroid and receive no actions.

As his ship was fitted with advanced sensors and one of his sides was clear of the meteor he opted to barrel roll off the meteor.

Could he?

It's my understanding that if he was attempting to barrel roll onto an asteroid he couldn't (unless he'd some other upgrade), does it not work the other way?

Thanks

Yes -This is a free action that can be performed while overlapping an obstacle, per the FAQ.

As long as the template and the ships final position are clear it's fine. Asteroids stop you rolling onto them, not off.

Free actions are permitted whilst on an asteroid.

While barrel rolling (and boosting) you only care about the template and the final position of the ship. That's why it doesn't work the other way.
When you do it onto an asteroid, the final position of the ship is overlaping it, so you can't.
When you do it the other way, the only thing involving the asteroid is the starting position of the ship, and it doesn's have anything to say there.

(All of this asuming the template doesn't overlap, of course)

Being on an asteroid does not deny actions

If you overlap an asteroid you skip your normal action that turn, free actions are totally legal. If we are talking adv sensors, then this is the following turn (or after he was tractored). Adv Sensors doesnt tell you to move your action to a different point so even if he was somehow suffering from the "Skip your action step" part of hitting a rock this turn, Adv Sensors is a free action so he bypasses that.

No obstacle flatout prevents actions. Debris stresses you (which largely cancels actions in itself) and rocks deny your normal action for that round. Same goes for bumping.

Long as he didnt overlap the rock when barrelrolling, that is.

The key confusion for most people seems to be that hitting/being an an asteroid prevents actions, when in fact it makes you skip your perform action step.

Even if the poor soul were in the worst possible spot on the asteroid--no legal barrel rolls and the front guides placed so they'll overlap when they execute their maneuver--they could still use Advanced Sensors to get a Focus or Target Lock and have a fifty/fifty chance of suffering no ill effects from the asteroid this round whatsoever.
