Rebel Saboteurs?

By Moeaswordusrex, in Imperial Assault Skirmish

Are they worth purchasing? I have been debating between three options, Greedo, ISB infiltrators and rebel saboteurs. I feel that most will tell me Greedo is the best choice, which I wouldn't disagree with, and ISB infiltrators would probably be next in line (and I admit they do look fun, especially in combination with agent Blaise), but what I really want to know is, are the saboteurs at all worth buying? They look like quite interesting units with the potential to pull of some good damage, and with the ability to inflict stun and blast that makes them even more tempting, and so far I have found I enjoy rebel squads a great deal, especially the trooper units they have to offer like echo base troopers and alliance rangers. But there are few concerns I have with them, like they seem potentially quite squishy, and although sometime their attack seems amazing sometimes, other times it seems laughable... red and yellow dice aren't very consistent in damage output... But perhaps with targeting computer and their pierce 2 surge they might be able to push enough damage through.

So ultimately I would just like to ask your opinion on rebel saboteurs, and of of course feel free to make other suggestions as well if you wish, thank you very much for your time.

I played against some sabs last weekend. i forgot the elites had 5 speed. They were pesky, and i had to keep track of them. Having the spy trait is pretty valuable if you're going to build a command deck that way.

I picked up a pack that day.

I would rank the 3 packs you're looking at as 1 Greedo, 2 Sabs, 3 ISB

I think you mean the yellow dice isn't very consistent. The red die is the most consistent of any die we can currently field. I'd say they are fun to play and get a set for yourself but it's hard to argue that they are the best option. A couple things hold them back.

Low health on white die. Yes they could roll a dodge but obviously that isn't the case most of the time. Also with eQuays so prevalent you can't even really count on dodges to ever stick. It's very easy for some of the popular units to one shot even the Elite Sabs right now.

Low Range is even more detrimental now with Nal Hutta popping up as the new tourney map. And even before that the guaranteed 3 range doesn't really cut it without putting your units well into dangers path.

No surges for damage. On a yellow die this is killer. Yes against a bad opponent you can hope to get some sick blasts surges off but most people will play around that. Not having a consistently useful surges hurts bad.

Even saying all this they are still fun and you won't be automatically throwing the game if you field them. So if you like the idea of running around blasting people faces off then pick up a set.

I like Sabs, but they are overcosted now. The spy trait is great, but they really need Targetting Computer, as you suggested, which is 8 points for ranged units that can't hit very far and need to be focused to really pack a punch. Hera can help some with that, but they are still pretty squishy.

However, they are versatile and fun to play. I would get them before ISB (but then I'd always get Rebels before Empire ?).

The Empire is going to strike you down next Monday for saying that.

Ha ha ha, looking forward to it ?

Cheers for the replies guys, they have been very helpful. I'm surprised to hear though that most of you would choose saboteurs over ISBs, but I'm not exactly great at the game.

Yeh, you pretty much summed it up. Luckily for me I only play at home with my family, so hopefully they should be fun. Blasting faces off does sound tempting, as long they can live long enough to do that.

If you want to run Imperial spies, or almost spies in general, ISBs have some top notch command cards.

If spies aren't in your plan, then I'd agree with @Fightwookies ranking, Greedo, Sabs, ISB.......because GIA

Aaahh, makes sense.

But @wannabepudge is right. there are some solid command cards for spies in the ISB pack. Strategic Shift, Comm Disruption, Data Theft

Gotta say, the rebel saboteur models are real selling point for me, they look like a lot of fun to paint.

Aye, the command cards in that pack look great, but there are a phew in the saboteurs pack that also look good, but not for spies really.

I've not painted my Sabs or ISBs yet, but I enjoyed painting Greedo. Probably more because I was painting Vinto at the same time and trying to mix different tones of Rodian to my liking was an enjoyable process :-)

Aye, had a similar experience when painting the trandotion hunters, which unfortunately look pretty bad because they were my first to paint, but it was a tone of fun. I would really like to paint Greedo too, I feel like the eyes could be quite a challenge, depending on how much effort I want to put into them.

eSaboteurs are still really good. ISBs have never been. The only thing you might want from the ISBs are the Command Cards to use with the Sabs!

Hera and Trusted Ally on 3po have made eSabs pretty good again I think by sort of replacing the need for hero Luke.

Cheers for all your help guys, I ended buying the saboteurs and I have finished painting them, but now my next question is, what squad should I put them in? Perhaps I should create a new thread for that.

I really like the eISBs. I know people like to throw flak at them, but I believe that in the right hands they are very strong. They take some practice to play well, but once you get them down they can rock.

From what I can tell, if you managed to make them hidden they could potentially become quite powerful, but I would say the issue with this, is that in order for that to happen you would have to rely on good rolls, or to have agent blaise and hope your opponent plays a command card, but I would say that they do look quite usable for 7 points, but, and although I don't have them yet, it would seem that jet troopers would just replace them at the same cost with more damage potential, which is really quite unfortunate...

I do wonder if eISB will start to see some play on Nal Hutta just because of how easy it will be to pull off coordinated raid with those wide open spaces. Getting 4 potential attacks on a turn from two models is pretty nice. Although it will of course mean leaving both figures in line of sight of a target.

coordinated attack is once per group per round sadly, so no four attacks.
