What's with the flight stands?

By KelRiever, in X-Wing

You know, I thought they were great, fit well, etc. Thought they'd last. But it's been all of 4-5 months since I've owned a set and they have first, started to not fit correctly and second, break. I wouldn't mind if it was simply the stackable pegs, I've got plent of those. But the receiving end that's glued into the fighters snapping? That sucks!

This is on the TIE F/O's, and with some of the pegs independently not slotting right. Right now I'm hoping this is an isolated thing...that happened to about 3 different ships and pegs. But I'll be pretty frustrated if it isn't.

Purely a production issue. I know how to fix them, I've been working for miniatures forever....it's simply a unnecessary pain. And, I know how to correctly store the miniatures as well, so there's been no issue there.

Please don't tell me these flight pegs are ultra cheap and just start snapping over time!

Not all the stands and bases are 100% compatable between releases. You'll probably find some of the pegs from the first few waves really loose if you try them with newer ships, and vice versa. But if you're anything like me I'm willing to bet you've got more pegs and bases than you're ever likely to use in a single game anyway.

What I usually do is find and bases pegs that fit well with my ships, and store them together where I can so I don't need to keep searching before I play. I've not had many pegs break, but I have had a problem with the sockets on the ships cracking once or twice if the peg's too tight a fit.

The socket breaks are the worst! F me on that I don't even want to fix it it's so discouraging!

In the future, I'll probably do what you recommend.

My Lambda shuttle socket cracked, so I need to fix that, and I think one ofmy Firesprays may be on it's way out as well (although both are probably my own fault as I use epic stands with them to help avoid bumps). I have literally seen a small ship socket explode once with a peg that was too tight a fit - the model fell over, the socket shattered and the TIE ended up halfway across the room!

The only out-of-the-box problem I've had though was with the C-ROC - one of the stands simply would not connect to the base at all, looked like a bit of a manufacturing issue (fortunately I have spares!)

I think part of the problem is wear on the dies. As the dies wear the parts become slightly larger. You run into flight pegs from newer waves being too tight to fit the socket on the ship(s).

The other part of the problem may just be the direction of the manufacturing tolerance. If the peg on the flight stand is +x/-0 and the socket on the ship is +0/-x, you'll run into a problem of interference fits.

I can find compatible combos for small ships but the thing that torques me up is the large ship bases and pegs. They seem to fit so well initially but squeeze out after a round or two and your big ship falls over and plays dead. After three or four times it gets kind of old.

ships falling off the peg is part of the game experience. Which is why we should go to Vassal. :P ;)
