Speed Dial and attack question/clarification

By klyver, in Star Wars: Armada Rules Questions

All,

Myself and a friend realized we have been messing up dial "spending" times and improper obstacle placement.

What we had been doing: obstacles only range 3 from each edge (long and short), now I realize that it is range 5 from the short sides and range 3 from the long sides....

We also messed up concentrate fire dial and tokens...a lot. I did not realize that you could not spend the dial for an attack and the token on another...now I know you need to spend both at the same time and your re-roll may get "wasted."

First, I'll say thank you to those that always seem to answer questions and I'm hoping you'll extend that grace to me. I do not have current access to my rulebook and I can't download/view the rules on the connection I am currently on. I have two questions:

1. When is the correct timing on changing the speed from a navigate dial. Do I do this immediately after turning the dial over or do I wait until I move the ship? Also if I have a navigate token as well....I can go from speed 3 to speed 1?

2. I have been told the attack range is from cardboard to cardboard and that the plastic base does not count for that (example: the range stick fits only over the plastic "edges" of the base and does not cover any of the cardboard template at all).

Thanks for your patience, and looking forward to some help.

No Worries. Nice and straightforward!

1)

For spending the Dial/Token, the correct time is after you've done your attacks, and you are picking up the Maneuver Tool to Plot Maneuvers. That is the "Determine Maneuver" Step of an Activation.

You declare if you are Spending Dial, Token, or Dial+Token during that point... If you spend Dial+Token, and there are no other upgrades in play, you can indeed change speed by up to 2 points, as well as getting your additional yaw. You declare the spend, and then you can factor that into your maneuver choices. Because your choice is not "locked in" until you lock the tool in, and you can spend Dials/tokens and gain no effect for it , if you decide not to change speed after all.

2)

Attacking is Cardboard to Cardboard (as it is Hull Zone to Hull Zone, and Hull Zones are defined in the rulebook as being marked on the cardboard, and not including the plastic base.)

But Plastic to plastic DOES count for other Non-Attack measurements, such as Tractor Beams, or determining if you're within a certain Distance of "Home One"

Hope that helps!

So just to clarify for speed changing: I can say, "I am going to change my speed to 3." I can place the tool down and see if I like where I would end up. If I don't like my final position (all of this without locking the tool in) I can say, "No I will stay at speed 2." Is this correct, or am I stuck at speed 3 without even locking in the tool?

You can resolve the Navigate command at any time during the Determine Course step:

Determine Course : Straighten the maneuver tool, then click the joints of the maneuver tool a number of times in either direction up to the corresponding yaw values indicated on the ship’s speed chart for the current speed. The ship can resolve a <Navigate> command to adjust speed and/or yaw.

i.e. right up until you lock the tool in.

So you don't need to choose your speed (or spend the dial/token) until then.

Once you slot the maneuver tool's teeth into the ship base you're done, you must make that maneuver at the speed you have chosen. If you're not sure yet about where you want to go you can hold the maneuver tool above the ship and mess around with it before you decide what to do

Got it, appreciate the help
