If you by 'X' then you need to buy 'Y'

By The Mighty Boushh, in X-Wing

I have been looking on the forums lately for a good Fenn Rau build (as I finally got around to buying a Protectorate Starfighter). I discovered that pretty much everyone says that you need to have Autothrusters on him, an upgrade card that is only available in the StarViper expansion. So I now need to buy a StarViper to get the most out of my Protectorate Starfighter.

This got me to thinking, are there any other ships that if you buy, then you need to buy another expansion to get the best build for them?

Basically, "If you buy 'X', then you need to buy 'Y' as well".

I was hoping that the more experienced players here would be able to give their opinions on this subject (I think that this information could help newcomers to the game as well), does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks.

The original culprit was the TIE Interceptor.

The Interceptor loves Push the L:imit, but originally that upgrade was only available with the A-Wing Expansion pack. So, if you wanted to get the best out of the Interceptor, you needed an A-Wing as well.

Then Imperial Acves came along, and another way to get Push the Limit arrived. But of course, the Interceptor really loves Autothrusters as well...

The same applies to the Inquisitor's TIE - you rarely see him without Push and Autothrusters as well.

Basically every good ship except Omega Leader requires you to buy multiple ships.

Pretty much any ship that has had a re-release "fix" after the fact will really benefit from that release, to the point of not really being competitive without it.

a-wing, b-wing, interceptor, defender, bomber, tie advanced, scyk, khiraxz, starviper.

That's because, for some reason, people want to use the Protectorate as arc dodgers, but out of the box, they are supposed to be ridiculously jousty : with the title and Fearlessness, they get a guaranteed hit and evade if right in the face of the opponent, where autothrusters don't trigger. I always play my Fenn with those upgrades, and a torpedo aided by guidance chips. If I'm low on points, I just go with a Stealth device and no ordinance.

And the TIE Aggressor.

Oh, wait ... you said good ships.

You can buy upgrade cards on eBay though. Just have to get enough to make it worth the shipping fees. Sometimes better than getting another ship.

I picked up 4 plasma torpedoes yesterday.

@NilsTillander

Autothrusters is a significantly better defensive mod than stealth device. What if ur opponent has a PWT or TLT, with ur build ur screwed. There is a reason everyone runs Autothrusters on anything that can take it, it is probably some of the most value u could get for 2pts. Also people do not run Fearlessness is because high ps pilots really thrive with multiple action, which is possible Mindlink or PTL.

In short never run Stealth Device INSTEAD of autothrusters but if u can run them both go ahead

Or just submit to the addiction and buy at least two of each expansion. All your bases are covered, your wallet is lighter and you can look at your spouse and with complete sincerity say, "Mistakes were made".

This basically sums up the X Wing economy.

Newcomers shouldn't be bothered by this and just proxy those cards or not use them. Autothrusters shmautothrusters.

I should add to what I said above, the down side is you need to have the actual card to play formal games. As verlaine said, proxy that ****. There is nothing worse that buying ships to try a combo, only to realise that it sucks and doesnt work like you thought it might.

Proxy...It's the X Wing gamers friend.

To answer the OP's question, here are some of the more common combos:

  • If you buy a Tie Advanced, then you need to buy an Imperial Raider as well. (Advanced Targeting Computer and TIE/x1)
  • If you buy a Tie Defender, then you need to buy Imperial Veterans as well. (TIE/x7 and TIE/D)
  • If you buy a Y-wing, then you need to buy a K-wing (or a Tie Aggressor) as well. (TLT)
  • If you buy Most Wanted, then you need to buy a K-wing (or a Tie Aggressor) as well. (TLT)
  • If you buy a X-wing, then you need to buy a T-70 X-wing (or Heroes of the Resistance) as well. (Integrated Astromech)
  • If you buy a Special Forces TIE, then you need to buy a TIE Striker (or a Tie Aggressor) as well. (Lightweight Frames)
  • If you buy an IG-2000, then you need to buy an IG-2000 as well. (Brobots) :)

Along with the TIE/FO, the TIE Striker doesn't really need another expansion pack to really work. Oh and the ARC-170 works pretty well too, though adding an Astromech from one of the core sets might be better.

A buddy and I went halvsies on a Core Set. We played one game and immediately decided we need more ships.

If you buy a Core Set, then you need to buy everything else. #plasticcrack

My buying guides have an 'also of interest' for each expansion that points you at common upgrades.

good guide. I think the new sycks may have some potential (not a critique--you wrote this before CROC), and the new pilots are fun for casual play.

The one thing missing is the warning that the rookie pilot will soon want to buy them all.

T-70 from the New Core set and the expansion, needs HotR for integrated (core only) and patern analyzer/primed thrusters, or StarViper for above mentioned Autothrusters.

5x M3a's boom all you need no extra boxes, for a great list. (my personal favorite list)

Legend says Omega Leader Locked the developers from modifying his upgrades.

I think the number of ships that do not require upgrades from other expansions to be played optimally is very few. A cursory look through the roster says -- barring ships that don't need upgrades -- the TIE Aggressor (Sienar Specialist -- Twin Laser Turret, Lightweight Frame) and TIE/fo (Omega Leader -- Juke, Comm Relay) alone (though some ships I'm not too familiar with). There are some that can be run passably out of the box (K-wing?), and some that only require one other upgrade (TIE Phantom -- Veteran Instincts only for a baseline version). I think a lot of the puzzle for new players getting into the game (and intending to play in tournaments) is figuring out how to get a synergistic group of ships and upgrade cards with a minimum of purchases: a purchase strategy. The 101 articles and thread help with this.
