Carnor Jax vs. Kyle Katarn

By Khyrith, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Hi folks. I've been playing the game casually with a buddy for about two years, about one night a quarter or so. Last night, I participated in my first store weekly play night against a guy who has obviously played / studied the game WAY more often than I have. My squad included Vader (TIE ADV x1), Soontir Fel, and Carnor Jax.

His squad included an ARC-170, Poe, and Kyle Katarn (HWK-290) - Kyle had some sort of focus-stacking mod that went with his focus-assigning ability. When I pulled Carnor in close to Kyle (by which time he had accrued about six focus tokens), the other player rather smugly announced that while Carnor prevented ships at Range 1 from TAKING or SPENDING focus tokens... he could not prevent them from ASSIGNING / PASSING tokens. Thus nerfing Carnor's ability against that particular ship's focus-stacking/passing ability.

Is that an accurate statement?

Thx in Advance!

p.s. Truth be told, I soon thereafter massed on Kyle and turned him into space dust with my other two ships to remove what I saw as the most dangerous threat.... ;-) But since I expect to see that guy again, I'd like to know how to use (or not use) Carnor vs. Kyle.

That's correct. They can't take the Focus action, nor can they spend Focus tokens, but nothing stops them assigning focus tokens from other sources (e.g. Mindlink, Rage) nor from passing them to other ships (Kyle, Manaroo).

Carnor does shut down the entire stack of tokens on the Moldy Crow otherwise though, and he still stops anyone in his bubble from spending them.
