Quality vs Quantity... Why not Both?

By Drasnighta, in Star Wars: Armada Fleet Builds

So, this is just a kitbash brainstorm based on what I can actually put on the field....

Obviously, this is just a concept, and needs a *lot* more Consideration... Leia is not set, this could work with Dodonna, Cracken, Mothma... All of which would free up points for say, External Racks being ladelled out more freely, for example...

Its mostly because "Activation Trumps All" was something that was mentioned previously, and I'm looking, effectively, at adding some Quality to the baseline quantity activation...

Is this a line of thought even worth Pursuing?

And yes. 8 Activations. 11 Deployments. Because I can. No sensible reason, just that I can.

(I don't believe Activaton Number trumps all, and have actually had more success with *3* ship lists than more, recently... But again, this is just a concept)

Of course, at the same time, I'm re-working "Nose Punch 3.0" and we'll see how that fares.

Options discussed include, but not limited to:

* Changing Admiral to Dodonna, Gaining a bunch of Racks
* Changing Admiral to Mothma/Cracken, Gaining Bid
* Dropping 2 Zs, gaining 15pt Bid, run like a Super-Clonisher
* Drop to 7 Activations, gain Racks almost across the board.

Any other thoughts?

How would it fair against heavy long-range ships? No doubt you will have some activation advantage, but someone going first with Ackbar and an MC80 could potentially toast two of any of these.

Dodonna would be nice since you can shut down their shields with a proper draw, or draw into that last damage you need with structural.

Mon Mothma is always solid, especially with two MC30c's.

Having racks for how cheap they are would certainly make losing a flotilla worth it.

That's what I'm thinking... Certainly, in the very leas,t it needs a Bid for First...

The other side of that is... I have 8 activations... If I let an Ackbar Player shoot at 2 Ships with all of his assigned bonuses, I probably deserve to lose 'em ;)

Truer words were never spoken.

These ships all have garbage maneuverability at higher speeds though (save the GR's), and that would be my only real concern otherwise.

You are better off concentrate firing a blue dice if you havent rolled an accuracy, and using Leia token too on the blues, rather than sensor teams here. Not enough dice to justify sadly. Take ordnance experts.

I am not sure you have quality though. All these ships want to be at close range, and for good fleet management you dont want them all at close range at once. TRC90's have the advantage that they arent reliant on activation order and offer reliable damage throughout. I get what you are trying to do and will be interesting to see the results, but I think you have gone too far. Will be curious to see how you adjust it, perhaps dropping a single hammerhead for beefing up two of the activations will go a very long way.

Hi,

Short time lurker here but I signed up to specifically ask you about your comment that "Activation Trumps All". Could you explain that a little further as to why you say that?

Ive only been playing for about 2 months now, so some things maybe be obvious to others are new to me.

Thanks in advance.

I'd cull the GR-75s to provide the Hammerheads with ER and EHB, then give the MC30s OE, and some sort of ordnance if you still have the points, but that's an opinion. Leia will do the ships well, she's half an ER plus a reroll every turn you CF; my big concern is you want to come in guns blazing at maximum speed, and the Z-95s are Speed 3. My Defender/Bomber wing will patiently wait for you to outrun them, then pounce (admittedly much less absurd than it was pre-Rhymer nerf).

The barebones nature reminds me of Russia's World War II armies, with quantity being a quality all of its own. Certainly it can bring about victory, but at great cost to itself. Best I think it might pull against competent players is a 7-4, more often than not a 6-5 unless it really plays to objectives. Attrition is certainly not its friend, and would see sharp declines as losses mount up, especially if facing gladiators or ISD1s. Neat concept though.

I went this route but haven't got to play it. Don't have high hopes for it but it could be fun to fly.

Its me taking a comment statement to the extreeeeme. :)

A lot of people - especially here on the forums - will talk about last/first and having more activations than your opponent, so you are able to move a favoured ship as the last thing ot move in a turn, and then move it immedaitely at teh start of the next turn - basically getting 2 turns of actions with that ship without any reprisal. Its a common tactic especialyl when combined with shot-range heavy hitters like Gladiators, MC30s and even ISDs - because it lets them "Move, Shoot, then Scoot".

This then gets taken in an escalated fashion - because there's little that can be done if you secure it... All you can do is punish your enemy after the fact if they use it against you... This then leads some people to believe that the most important part of the game is getting more moves that are unanswered...

and this list is a bit of a ludicrous take, because the "average" we see for activations is much less than what I'm putting down on the table.

I'm still punting some considerations about... And trying to do what I can to keep things in the 7-8 activation level... Mostly because I want to see the look on one specific opponent's face when I Out-Deploy and Out-Activate his 6 Ship Dual MC30 Fleet.

Mothma - she'd add to your fleet's resilience across the board and save points (Im biased, she's my favourite, but still).

Thanks for taking the time to respond to a lowly noob.

Serious thanks to you for asking the question for me to respond to!

A lot of people - myself included - get caught up in the little clique online and quite often can't see the forest for the trees, so a reminder that a lot of people are jsut trying to keep up is not only refreshing, its very helpful and neccessary. :)

Well I certainly appreciate it. Is there a sticky post or FAQ section of this website that provides a list of all the acronyms?
