Vassal Autumn 2017 Tournament (official thread)

Dr Alex Vs @Irishmadcat has finished. We played my most wanted and my cheapest ship was more expensive that his most expensive so that kind of backfired.

It was also good to play someone who really knows how to use Sato, rather than someone who gets 10-1'd and blames their list.

Irish set up his hammerheads opposite my MC80 and got a spotter in, thankfully he then got his hammerheads in the way of each other so I killed them all, which included Sato - his most wanted. His fighters took down two corvettes including my most wanted, one of his hammerheads took out one of mine just before it died and his transports escaped, just.

overall 260-159 to me, MoV 101 so a 7-4.

James was a great bloke to play and also showed me how to use discord (my girlfriend was out so I could make noise) which was good.

And Logfile https://www.dropbox.com/s/2pcnawkzdpsysyj/Log file round 3.vlog?dl=0. Good to play Dr Alex who also saved my **** with admiral tokens at Uk nationals. After this tournament is done I'm going back to bigger ships though.

I think I picked most wanted as it was the only thing which would potetially get me above that 400 points slot if I got really really lucky for the wild card mov slot.

I did the same with CO in my Round 3 game. I think there's a lot of that going around. :)

Which is good. Leads to some interesting final-round games instead of those out of reach of the top tables just kind of checking out for the last round.

All those interested, @mhd vs GiledPallaeon, starting now on Vassal. Come one, come all; see how many Raiders a Relentless is worth.

And just like that it is over, my second 2-9 this tournament, 423-196 in @mhd's favor. We played my Most Wanted, and against my better judgment (though it ended up being moot since neither ended up in exceptional danger) I selected a R-2 that I thought would end up near the ISD instead of his flagship (and my Gozanti, obviously). I deployed poorly, came in worse, and while the Raiders were mopped up by my squadrons, they did their job. @mhd knows what he's doing with those corvettes, so stay sharp, whoever flies against this list next. The early Raider dice rolls (triple accs on a DCap shot at one point) were offset by later ones, particularly whichever R-1 got within one or two damage of perfect output over four shots, all burying their missiles into Samothrace (Relentless)'s side. Oh them burns

Undeadguy vs @BiggsIRL possibly on Sunday, 24th, at 12PM EDT / 11 AM EST.

The match against GiledPallaeon hinged on a couple of small errors in deployment that I was able to exploit. The biggest error, was that his Quasar was coming in hot at speed 2. This allowed my Raider2's to jump out and put some damage on it at the start of turn 2 while the meager firespray cover did their job to take the hits; (they're mercenaries, they knew what they signed up for and did their job, the empire will send a coupon for 15% off for an oil change to their families in gratitude) The quasar then died at the start of turn 3, cutting down on Gileds ability to direct the squadrons. The ISD lumbered into the double arcs of a R1, an R2 and the side arc of another R1. Concentrated fire, and 2 sets of external racks, left it without a brace and lacking shields on the sides and rear but with it's hull entirely intact and a R1 in it's rear. A perfect roll (and reroll) of 8 unmanaged damage from the front and another 2 from the side (followed by a ram) dropped the ISD at the start of turn 4. The final gozanti died at the start of turn 5.

My list works off of the theory that "speed is its armor" and presents the problem to the opposing player, do you chase and finish off the damaged ships that just performed its attack run, or do you try to engage the inbound threats that are over range 5 away? The speed 5 defenders, with Merek & Jendon pretty much negate this approach, which is why if we played this game 10 more times, the smart money would be on Giled winning at least 9 of those games. If not for some serious luck and an error in deployment, this game would have gone the other way in a big way. I seriously enjoyed this game, but it's probably not a fun list to play against since nobody likes trying to swat away hornets that are always bouncing out of range.

I'll take that rematch. It can help me start working out if either a Kuat or a Cymoon are a good fit for the list.

Some variant of 10-1 with obscene MOV greater than 400.

Looks like we have finished both the Euro and NA:E sectors.

And as usual, I forgot to start the log til halfway through Turn 1. LOG FILE

Just saw a little error when watching the log.

You attacked Shara with Valen and used an accuracy to spend the scatter via sloane. And Double use the scatter again to negate the attack. This does not work ^_^. The defense token cannot be used for the effect when sloane spend it in this attack.

Lol, thanks. That actually just hit me today as I was thinking back through the game. There are a couple of other minor errors in that game too, but none should be too earth shattering. I noticed yesterday that he uses CF to get a flotilla flak shot at Ciena at one point, and I think I recall another error as well. I don't think either was a major game changer though.
