Where to start for casual play

By DKNecrosis, in X-Wing

Well for casual play you should just go with Faction that you feel like are coolest for you and your girlfriend. For example I have played with Scum ever since it came out and last 10ish games I have won only three of them and they're all more or less against Imperium. So if it is consensus is that Imperium is weak here in forum, it is not really the reality of the game and even less so with casual games.

So my advice is to buy whatever you feel like having and go from there, because I have seen people who suggested for casual players here to buy ridiculous things just to achieve some cards or builds that are on "top" meta, just take it easy and go with your intuition and so on.

This forum can be so cancerous for new players trying to start the game. Sorry guys I love ya but all you know exactly what I mean!!

I totally agree. I nearly always play against the same person, they use Imperial ships and I do not think they are weak at all. And if you are doing missions then the point of the game changes every time, it isn't just a case of which list is more powerful.

As a casual player I do find it strange how angry some people can get on here.

Yeah! I used to spend way more time here in the forum but I started to get too much into the "problems" of X-Wing and then I decided to take a break from here and got my X-Wing joy back, suddenly I made realization that there is very little wrong in this game and ever since been enjoying all much more.

I honestly have lost against the Imperium and Rebels more or less same amount and they both are good, just like Scum. Also we have pretty tight group of friends who I play with, around 4-6 players, my friends don't hardly ever do "respect" the asteroid rules, so sometimes they are R1 away from edges and so on, I always try to demand it because it has some effect on big ships, but you know, it's just casual games so no biggie. I do attend some tournaments, but my heart is on casual games hand's down, just so much more diverse squads and lax environment.

As a casual player myself, I have to say the advice here is really good.

The missions are a good way to get into the game as well, and are loads of fun. I just wish I got to play more often, I only get a game when my dad or brother comes to visit (which isn't often enough).

I will say this though, even as a casual player that doesn't play as often as I would like, once this game gets its hooks in you, you will probably end up buying more ships than you intended!

Haha I feel you, luckily I got some friends, and a girlfriend who also wanna play the game with me.

When I say casual, I only mean in the sense of I'm not gonna attend many (if any) tournaments. The same thing with Imperial Assault, I still ended up buying every expansion and almost every villain/ally pack in a little more than a month. Afraid something like that will also end up here, just wanted a point about how to start :D.

Im gonna play this primarily with my girlfriend, and sometimes my friends.

I have to buy 2 factions since nobody else I know owns it.

I'm thinking about buying Scums and Rebels, since apparently the imperials are weak in comparison.

i would like to have maybe One bigger ship and some small fighters for both factions, in a way so the matches will be balanced.

Hi. I normally am the guy to talk all about Casual games on the forums, but I was on vacation last week. Sorry for delay.

Well, I think getting ships that are in the movies and that people like are the best bet to start. I will warn you that Imperials often have a lot of cheaper ships, like Tie Fighters. This means you might need more ships for the Imperials than Rebels.

As a side note, if you are just playing casual, don't worry about buying things just for upgrade cards and pilots. You can always proxy some pilots or upgrades that you might need. If it's just you and your friends...and no one cares....where is the harm?

If you are looking for casual games and like Imperial Assault, you might want to look into Heroes of the Aturi Cluster. It's a fan made co-operative campaign that pits each person flying a specific pilot vs. AI controlled Imperials. There are a lot of missions and fluff there. It's great to be cooperative with your friends. The AI and missions are a real challenge. You get to expand your pilots and gain abilities more than normal X-wing. It's free. It's fan made, but professional quality. If you DO go this route, you will probably end up buying a lot more Imperials than Rebels. The more players in a game means more enemies. so, if you only have a few Tie Fighters, try to keep the players down to 2-3 players until you can get more. If you are more interested in this, I have a podcast dedicated to Casual X-wing and we talk details about it in a number of episodes. We even interview the creator. It's some of the best X-wing you can play.

Besides that, I would say buy what you want. Some people really like recreating the movies. So, Imperials have a bunch of Tie Fighters and one or two heavy hitters. Others happen to love specific ships or pilots. Maybe you want to recreate Star Wars Rebels? There are a ton of things for you to get. I might recommend looking for someone that is leaving the game and looking to sell a bunch of stuff at once. You can usually get a good collection for a good price.

PM me with any questions you might have on anything.

In all seriousness, the Empire has some great ships and certain builds are doing quite well. Unfortunately they are having the same problem the Rebels are having currently. The iconic ships for the Empire (Tie Fighters, Interceptors, Bombers, Advanced) are all not as competitive as other choices.
Checkout the 101 articles on ffg's website. There's some really great starter builds in those for rebels and imperials that are fairly competitive and not NPE.

Since HotAC came up, one thing I will say: it's a ton of fun, but you have to go back and buy a ton of original trilogy stuff you wouldn't be as likely to use before. We were sending you down the TFA route with knowledge more to come in Ep8 but HotAC is all about the original ties and original t65/ywing/Awing/bwing without some significant tweaks to the play set (my campaign I'm flying now we've tweaked it to allow players to fly any small base unless we democratically ban it as too powerful for the format... Like the kwing or Scurrg).

I like to think of myself as a benign lesion. . .sometimes annoying but easily ignored.

Is there an actual campaign like Imperial Assault? :o

I think that you should by the FO core set, play it, and then purchase what seems fun. Having a grasp for the game will be helpful though. If you like crazy ability combos, by the heroes of the resistance expansion which gives you the falcon and some more stuff for Poe. If you like aces, fly anything imperial. If you want simple jousting, maybe buy some Tie Agressors, or maybe even (gasp) some xwings. Don't try and buy what you hear is competetive. Its not all bad, but much of it is boring, and/or, super confusing for beginers abd difficult to fly well. Also, look over the ships in the xwing home page and see if anything catches your eye. If you may play competetively later, just buy newer ships, some of the older ones really suck competetively.

Well, there is a fan made campaign that is really well put together by a professional game designer. You can find it HERE (called Heroes of the Aturi Cluster).

I'll also shamelessly plug my podcast that goes into what the heck it is.

Ep 9 - Introduction to Heroes of the Aturi Cluster - jump to the 20 min mark if you want to just listen to HotAC

Episode 10: Artficial Intelligence in HotAC - jump to 57 min mark

Episode 11: Pilot progression in HotAC - 29 min mark

Episode 12: The Missions of HotAC - 26 min mark

Episode 18: Interview with stowaway Josh Derksen, creator of HotAC - min 7 of episode

That should get you going. It's really some of the best X-wing you will ever play. The only problem is that Josh got a job designing games and hasn't had time to work on this side project lately. He does have a Facebook page to talk about it and there are other people that have been working on more missions, campaigns, and even an Imperial version. None are official and I'll admit that I have not tried any of the others, but I'm still working on HotAC. I will say that even replay value is pretty cool as you just take a different pilot with different upgrades each time. Maybe even a different ship type. With new upgrade cards and pilot abilities constantly entering the game, it stays a bit fresh.

Oh, if you are having an issue with the AI, I just found an app that will do all the dice rolling and charts and stuff for you. It's pretty nice and might be less intimidating. You can download it here via Google Play. Sorry, but I don't have the iTunes link.

The fan made HotAC, yes. Ffg didn't write it.

Although, the huge ships like the Tantive IV or Gozanti do have a mini campaign of 3-4 missions and those are written by ffg

Ah I see. Mixed HotAC, with Heroes of the Resistance ?

Haha I'll bite and checkout your podcast. Thanks for all the information

His podcast is worth taking the bait for. I usually am listening to the next one within 24 hours of it dropping.

There are other good podcasts, but Shuttle Tyderium is unique in that it talks about missions, crazy lists, and other ways to fly than standard 100 point lists.

I sent a PM, but in case anyone else out there is looking for a campaign that pits players against each other, there is also the Narrative Event that we are hosting at GenCon. If you can't make GenCon, you can just grab the rules and play with some local buddies. We even did a 4 part audio drama to tell the backstory for it. There are a lot of unique missions and I think it's quite an accomplishment.
