36 Mines & Minefield Mapper

By Toimu, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Silly idea, but sounds fun if both people run the same List!

Cutlass Squadron Pilot (21)
Minefield Mapper (0)
Extra Munitions (2)
XX-23 S-Thread Tracers (1)
Cluster Mines (4)
Cluster Mines (4)
Guidance Chips (0)

The Cruise Missiles are probably a waste on a ship with a speed of 3. Unguided Rockets might be better.

I know some ships can have 3 bomb slots (maybe 4?). Any way to get more than 36 mines on the field?

Your list has the highest possible number for an Imperial list.

No ship has three bomb slots. A few ships have two bomb upgrade slots, and either Sabine or Cad Bane crew adds a third. There is no way to put 4 bomb upgrades on one ship.

No, Scum Firespray can get to four slots (Andrasta+Cad Bane).

Oops. Missed that one. I stand corrected. I'd love to fly against someone who dumps 16 points worth of Cluster Mines onto a Firespray. Challenge accepted.

Now if only the imps could put cad on a firespray!! rhymer crew card anyone?

I played someone who had done 2 cluster and bomblet the other day.

It dealt like 3 damage before it melted. It's too many bombs to realistically make use of. And you could just use Cad Bane+Slave I+EM to do it cheaper if you're going all clusters anyways.

That was the ship! But no Torpedo slot for Extra Munitions and no System Upgrade for Minefield Mapper.

Extra Munition should be a "Limited" card, so you can only equip 1 per list, right?

My bad, 1 per ship, not list.

Too bad Minefield Mapper doesn't let you drop them all at the start of the game, though.

I hope FFG releases a FAQ saying that soon. A lot of people are interpreting Minefield Mapper & Extra Munitions as "you can drop all 36 mines after the Place Forces step". That would turn the game into "Table Flip Olympics".

This is hilarious

No, this is hilarious:

Come At Me Bro

100 points

Lieutenant Dormitz (36)
Upsilon-class Shuttle (31), Advanced Sensors (3), Hyperwave Comms Scanner (1), Intel Agent (1)

Cutlass Squadron Pilot (32) x 2
TIE Punisher (21), Minefield Mapper (0), Extra Munitions (2), Unguided Rockets (2), Cluster Mines (4), Proximity Mines (3), Long Range Scanners (0)

So the point here is to fortress yourself in against lists with fewer base red dice... but you can be effective against other lists, too. Two strategies:

(1) Against opponents with six or fewer base red dice ((Dengar/Tel, Dengar/Nym, Miranda/Nym, etc):

Place an obstacle at 3x3 range in one of your near corners. Dormitz goes into that corner, facing out, at a 45 degree angle. The two Punishers go at an angle to the board edges in that corner, base corners in contact with Dormitz's front edge corners, in such a way that Dormitz bumps on a green one straight. Placed properly, the Punishers can do a hard 2 maneuver to get clear and stay on the board, or a 1 soft, and their firing arcs run parallel to the board edges to cover the dead space to the left and right of Dormitz' arc.

Activate Minefield Mapper. Place the two cluster mines about one base width away from the corner obstacle, at a 90 degree angle to each edge of the board, forming an "L" that blocks your ship in at Range 3. Prox min placement is optional, but can either be placed to control the approaches to the gaps at the board edges, or the approach over the obstacle (I recommend the latter).

On move, fortress. You've got 8 attack dice, so the two-ship meta lists and most three ship lists will be forced to try to engage you and fly through your cluster mines becasue you'll have the advantage if they just circle to try to force a Final Salvo. Dormitz can use Advanced Sensors to Coordinate the Punishers to drop additional Cluster or Prox Mines to make the approaches harder, and as the opponent approaches hand off Focus for Unguided Rockets, or set up Target locks to the Punishers for their Long Range sensors (useful for R1 primary attacks). There isn't an approach to you that isn't covered by 3 to 7 dice worth of attacks. When the "shields" (cluster mines) go down, break out and pursue.

(2) If the opponent has equal or more dice, the Punishers become blockers. TL early (valuable for R1 primary shots) then Focus for UGR. Dormitz will Coordinate to drop your mines one you're in the midst of the enemy, while he slow-rolls in to use his four-dice attacks. It's like having an Advanced Slam bomb drop ability, without the Advanced Slam. Use Minefield Mapper at the opening to create an "approach channel" through the obstacles that the shuttle will use to make it harder to get flanked.

Note that this assumes you only get one use per card from Minefield Mapper.

// Break //

Other hilarity to try using either a Punisher or Scurrg w/Havoc. Equip with Advanced Sensors, Cluster Mines, and Extra Munitions:

(1) Move, drop a Cluster Mine -- preferrably on your opponent who has already moved, or where your opponent will move next round.

(2) Next round, use Advanced Sensors to drop a second set of Cluster Mines directly on top of the first.

(3) Profit from six Cluster Mine tokens in close proximity ...
