Expanded Star System Generation

By Giaus Novus Khan, in Rogue Trader House Rules

Xodusprime, you were wondering about the distances between planets.

1 Void Unit is about 10 000 kilometres, as of RT book p.213.

This gives us all the information we need. Therefore, one Terra-sized planet roughtly fills on VU (Radius ~6300 km).

Terra (Earth) is about 150 000 000 km from the sun. This distance, is one AU, and is 1500 VU. (and as a sidenote, it takes aprox. 8 minutes to travel with the speed of light)

Radius of the Sun is 700 000 000 KM ~ 4.6 VU.

Mercury: 0.4 AU ~ 600 VU

Venus: 0.7 AU ~ 1050 VU

Mars: 1.5 AU ~ 2250 VU

Asteroid Belt: 2.3 - 3.3 AU (3450 VU - 4950 VU)

Jupiter: 5.2 AU ~ 7800 VU

Saturn: 9.5 AU ~ 14250 VU

Uranus: 19.5 AU ~ 29250 VU

Neptune: 30 AU ~ 45000 VU

That should give your a rought estimate how big starsystems should be. and given the daily travel amount of ships (Speed x48), it takes a while to reach the habitable planets from outside of the system (as some fluff says that you can't warp in to gravity fields or something..).

Also, I suggest you to read this: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kepler's_laws_of_planetary_motion . There is a simple formula used to calculate the distances between planets.

Versioned.

Outputs XML files and can Read them. Some documentation included in zip file.

Still available at

http://sites.google.com/site/letalisgravitas/individual-logs/log-syccophus/ConsoleCluster.zip

However, since I do not have full control of this site and the URL is subject to change, new versions will be at:

Hi XodusPrime,

This is frakking AWESOME, and I agree the interface is very cool and very 40k. I love the star maps, and the written output looks very similar to what our GM gives us right now as notes.

Opening the program up / extracting the files was easy but I did spend a few minutes feeling like a numbskull until I figured out that you just type n to start it working [i was inputting (n) instead of n cause I am stoopid] but once I worked it out it was very easy to use and update created star systems.

Thanks so much. Its really cool.

V 1.3 updated in place

http://p2the3.org/downloads/ConsoleCluster.zip

Now has some output options. Request was made at DR to have white backgrounds for printing. This is in place along with optional image scaling. Output is now placed in subfolders (because there's SOOOO much of it). The initial scan is also looking for XML files ONLY in sub-folders. Please move your XML files into a subfolder if you intend to load it for editing.

Please let me know if you have any questions/problems/commets/suggestions etc.

Thanks,

xodusprime that is one impressive piece of programming and a very, very useful one too!

Thanks for making it available to us all aplauso.gif

Awesome tool xodusprime!

One thing that I noted is that when you look at the notepad printout of the system, for the Outer orbit objects, it doesn't display those but instead repeats the Solar findings.

This isn't too big of a deal because I can go into the XML document and copy the Outer orbit objects from there. However, for the sake of completeness, I thought I would mention it.

Keep up the good work!

Very nice work. Please keep this going.

Nice aplication, one thing though. The Dust clouds seem a bit unreasonable with results such as:

-Celestial Body-
Gadoma-2-1S1
Dust Cloud
Atmosphere: Type I: Breathable
Gravity: Light
Orbit: Standard Orbit - Tide Locked
Hydrosphere: Saturated
Northern Terrain: Barren/Plains
Southern Terrain: Canyon/Maze

-Satellite-
Gadoma-2-1O3m3
Dust Cloud
Atmosphere: Type V: Toxic
Gravity: None
Orbit: Standard Orbit - No Axial Tilt
Hydrosphere: Saturated
Northern Terrain: Canyon/Maze
Southern Terrain: Plateau

-Celestial Body-
Gadoma-3-1S1
Dust Cloud
Atmosphere: Type II: Breathable (Breath-mask Suggested)
Gravity: Heavy
Orbit: Standard Orbit - Extreme Axial Tilt
Hydrosphere: Arid
Northern Terrain: Plateau
Southern Terrain: GM's Choice

Their atmosphere and terrain especially. Hope it helps.

Well you could call it an atmospheric envelope with terrain spread throughout like Larry Niven's 'Integral Trees'. Imagine a system with such a large/thick cloud of gas (atmosphere) around it in a disc that you could literally fly it into the envelope and exit your ship without a space suit to do repairs or paint the hull.

Thats a very interesting way to look at it but it is probably something I would want to make a rarity for players to encounter. Maybe some xeno or long forgotten archeotechnology could behind it.

The tables state that gravity, atmosphere, landmass & hydrosphere, and dominating landmass is for planets, dwarf planets, and moons (moons aren't included in dominating landmass) only, so thought it was something xodusprime might be interested in knowing.

Thank you for pointing that out, it was most unreasonable. What it actually was is that the dwarf planet abbreviated description was linked to the dust cloud abbreviated description. This has been corrected. V1.3.0.2 posted with this correction:

http://p2the3.org/downloads/ConsoleCluster.zip

It should have still appeared as a dwarf planet on your maps, so a single small circle instead of a large hashed cloud. You can open its XML file back up and change the name, or change the name in the XML file directly and reload it for re-output (or you can just change it to Dwarf Planet in your text file).

Thanks again!

Firstly - this is awesome...

Secondly... we have a bunch of systems that we generated before you came up with this excellent tool. Would it be possible somehow to generate a map from this info? That way we could have maps of all the systems?

Hmm, what did you have in mind? I'm working right now to enhance a person's ability to edit the systems (add/remove/change type etc) but I've been distracted by some other things the last couple of days. I could probably take it a step further and put in a "manual mode" that just gives you a blank cluster and lets you add your own stuff. Hopefully I'll have this out within a week, but it may take a bit longer for it to have all the features I'd like. Do you think this would satisfy your needs, or did you have something else in mind?

Did you have some kind of standard output or form that you were using before? I should be able to get it to read a format if its the same all the time.

Oh, also, I credited you by your forum name. Is that okay, or did you want me to use a different name?

Using my forum name is fine thanks!!

WE have written up some of the systems like so (**** bullets don't work in the forum?) - would that be along the lines of the editiing tool you were working on?

Just found this.

Thanks for putting in all the hard work :)

Sorry for the delay. Too much stuff going on between work/school/personal. The editing is a bit more robust, but still not where it needs to be. Hopefully I will have more time in the next week or so. This is all I managed to get done this evening, but it's 2AM and I need to sleep before I start messing up the code.

Updates: V1.5
-
Added list picking to terrain and hydrosphere
Added ability to change planet type
Can now change planet distance from star
Can change planet color (giant list... but its a start)
Fixed Bug: Moons default name did not properly increment number
Added settings file:
can skip scrolling, auto-breif mode, other awesome stuff
Gutted a bunch of stuff that you won't see, but that makes it easier for me to update code

p2the3.org/downloads/ConsoleCluster.zip

Awesome! I have a play with it!

Do you have a linux/unix friendly version?

Any chance of getting this table or program to work along with Astrosynthesis from NBOS software ? How awesome would THAT be?

AstroSynthesis

Sorry for the thread necromancy, but the link to the utility appears to be dead. Would it be possible to reupload to a different site? Or failing that, would anyone who still has the original files be willing to send them to me?

Thanks! That's greatly appreciated!

Hmm... I'll check my work PC. I swear I found something for this before.

Hello,

HeavensThunderHammer got ahold of me - sorry about letting my site go down; I didn't realize anyone would miss it. My gaming group broke up and I haven't worked on this application since. It is still in the 1.5 release. I've posted it to sourceforge: https://sourceforge.net/projects/rtcluster/files/distro/

It's written (poorly) in VB.NET using Visual Studio 2008. I'll get the source code put up so that others can play with it if they like. Now that I've been reminded of this project, I may just pick it back up; however, I don't even recall what else I was going to do to it anymore.

Please let me know if you have any problems downloading or running the files in the link above.
