K-Turn considered a non-straight maneuver?

By drathbun, in X-Wing Rules Questions

My younger son and I are playing a casual match. His Y-Wing pulled the critical that says the ship cannot be assigned straight maneuvers. Every single right turn (even a slight one) would take him off the board. Every single left turn would bump or hit an asteroid. I proceeded to plan my moves accordingly, and he revealed a k-turn! He argued that it wasn't a straight turn because the ship turns around at the end. I said it was a straight turn because it used the straight template. My son is at the age where everything is an argument (and he dropped x-wing for a while because of it) and I'm trying to encourage him to play again, so I let it go.

But who was right? I did a quick search and didn't find a specific answer.

Thanks

"Bearing" in Rules Reference, page 6. Your son is right. If it's not the same symbol on the dial, then it's not the same Bearing. Segnor's Loop uses a Bank template, not a bank maneuver. Tallon Roll uses a turn template, not a turn maneuver.

The bearing is defined by the symbol shown. Straight manoeuvres use the ↑ symbol. A k-turn does not use a ↑ symbol. Thus, it is not a straight manoeuvre.

You owe your son an apology. :) He was right.

Please take this the right way but you need to suck it up and admit you were wrong.

If this helps a straight maneuver looks more like an I on the dial why a K-turn looks a lot more like an inverted U and those two things don't look at all alike despite them both using the same template. I guess we might even say the template is two sided with the straight on one side/end and the k-turn on the other.

I was wrong. :) Now to figure out how to admit that to my son... LOL

If you look at your ship's maneuver chart you'll notice that it's a grid, speed on the vertical axis and bering on the horizontal axis. You'll also notice that k turns and straight maneuvers have different columns.

Also what everyone else said.

As I said just suck it up. If he hasn't learned this already maybe it's a golden time to teach him that his father isn't ALWAYS right and sometimes gets things wrong. When an answer isn't known it's ok to ask for help from others.

Please take this the right way ;) but you need to let it go, it's just a game, not a Lifetime Original Movie. I came here to get a rule clarified, and I did. If I wanted parenting advice I have many other sources that are far more appropriate (and useful) than a gaming forum.

My son knew I was unsure about the rule, and he also knew I was coming here to ask the question. Clearly I'm already providing the example of "asking others for help." He was of course massively pleased that he was correct. He already delights in telling me that I'm wrong all the time. Most often about how much video game time he should be allowed.

Maybe you've seen this?

You can probably guess the age of my son based on my original post. LOL

Anyway, I'm perfectly happy to keep the conversation related to X-Wing. When I want parenting advice, I'll ask for it. Most likely somewhere else... thanks.
