General 'squad' building and collecting advice help

By Mikemx, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Ok folks, so I'm still more of a collector rather than a gamer but I'd like to be collecting with a view to gaming at some point soon. My question is, do I have too many of some ship types for general gaming purposes? I'm not planning on being a tournament player but just playing friendly games, so I'm not after ultimate squad lists as such but rather have a mix of ships to have nice balanced games if that makes sense. Also if I want to buy new things, I have to sell hobby related stuff for financial reasons! So in other words, if I have an excess of anything, I can sell it and get something different instead.

Here's the ships I'm not sure if I have too many of and their quantities - B-wing 3, A-wing 3 (includes rebel aces), Tie Interceptor 4 (includes Imp Aces). I've generally being buying the smaller ships in pairs so is there any point in having more than 1 of some of the smaller ships (mainly the higher points things).

Lastly, I've ended up with three sets of dice, is their any real point in having more than 2 sets of dice for the vast majority of games?

thanks

Mike

I'll start with the dice. Six dice of each color is enough for almost every list in the game. There are some "rail gun" or "Mini Death Star" build that pull off attacks with more than six reds, but these lists are generally a 1-trick pony. If you don't have enough dice in your set, you can always borrow an opponent's dice or keep track of your first results while you roll your dice again to get the correct number rolled.

The ship question is highly subjective. I know of players who collect one of everything, even if they're buying something they won't use. I know of players who buy enough of every ship to fly 100 points worth of the lowest cost generic pilot. I'm an ace-winger, so I typically buy enough of an expansion to be able to fly multiple named pilots in one list, but there are some sets I don't even consider buying. I split my game time between Empire and Rebels. In the newest wave I bought two TIE Aggressors so I can use Kestal and Double Edge in the same list. I bought zero Wookiee Gunships because nothing in the set interests me. If your ships were my ships I would sell a B-wing Expansion, because I won't fly three of them in a list. I would sell two Interceptors because 4 is twice as many as I'll ever fly. That's based on how I play the game. My point is you should play the game first, then sell everything you don't enjoy playing with.

Thanks for the thoughts. I forgot I had bought a second dice set so I bought another one, hence the three sets! I guess there's the first thing to Ebay off!

I've had a few quick basic games using some of the simpler earlier stuff and to be fair it did occur to me that more than 2 B-wings in a force is probably not so good. The problem is that I didn't know (as I suppose many folks didn't either) that the Imp and Rebel Aces sets hence I've ended up with possibly one too many B-wings and TIE Interceptors. Looking at the A-wings again, I guess having 3 of them in a force isn't so bad.

I suppose what I'm trying to do is build a collection so I can just pick and choose different things depending on how I feel. It's just a matter of having a rough idea of what's worth having more than one of in a force and yes, I agree, I need to get playing more!

I've made a list of what I've got so far, if it helps, I need some more stuff for the scum, maybe some more fighters. If there's no number after the ship name, it means I only have one of them.

Rebels - Tantive IV, Transport, Mil Falcon, YT-2400, HWK 290, Headhunter, A-Wing 2, B-Wing 3, E-Wing 2, X-Wing 3, Y-Wing 2.

Imps - Raider, Decimator, Lambda, Slave 1, TIE; Punisher, Phantom 2, Defender 2, Advanced 3, Bomber 2, Interceptor 4, Fighter 3

Scum - Hound's Tooth, IG-2000, Starviper, M3-A 2, Y-Wing, Headhunter 2.

I could easily use the Headhunters and Y-Wings for either Scum or Rebels, so I didn't bother getting anymore of them

thanks

I forgot the Raider came with a TIE Advanced, so I have 3 TIE Advanced, so maybe I should sell one of the Advanced's too!

thanks

It depends on playing style as jmswood wrote. From a tournement perspective, what also called the "Meta" I would sell off the following ships (but mabey not the upgrades, which is way more complicated to say anything about):

Rebels - Tantive IV, Transport, B-Wing 2, E-Wing 1, X-Wing 2.

Imps - Raider, Phantom 1, Advanced 2, Interceptor 3.

Scum - none.

I've listed the Dice and 1 each of the B-Wing, Advanced and Interceptor for sale for now and ordered a carry/storage case for my Imperial stuff (got one case already). I'd like to get the Imp Carrier as I like the model and it gets 2 TIE Fighters, which helps with a TIE swarm then maybe think about getting some more Scum stuff.

If you've got 4, that's actually not a bad squad. 4 Tempests with TIE/x1, cluster missiles, guidance chips and accuracy corrector is fairly good.

Thanks for the input so far, I've sold a TIE Advanced already, so the squad of 4 of them isn't going to happen but it means I can get something else to add to my collection. It's not really for tournament or serious gaming, more for collecting different things and trying them and just having fun games. I just didn't want to end up having multiples of ship types that it's not worth having more than 1 or 2 of.
