My Store Championship experience at Island Games

By BlodVargarna, in X-Wing Battle Reports

I've been looking forward to this tournament since it was announced. I love this store. The owner is cool and he's got great staff working there.

This store sees a lot of really skilled players. Today's Tournament was no exception. We had Duncan Howard playing today (my first tournament there a couple of years ago had Paul Heaver).

I went there with my regular X-Wing and all around gaming buddy James P. Both of us having secured the day from our significant others through various expenditures of marriage capital (if you're married you'll understand).

It may come as no surprise to some here I played a Rebel list featuring Poetensity.

Here's my list:

Dashing Poe (97)

Poe Dameron (41) - T-70 X-Wing
Intensity (2), BB-8 (2), Primed Thrusters (1), Black One (1), Autothrusters (2)

Dash Rendar (56) - YT-2400
Lone Wolf (2), Heavy Laser Cannon (7), Rey (2), Outrider (5), Smuggling Compartment (0), Rigged Cargo Chute (1), Countermeasures (3)

Game one vs Miguel

He was flying Assaj, Trandoshan, and Sunny.

He set up Sunny and Trandoshan towards the middle on his right and Assaj on his left. I kept Poe and Dash close (something I did too much of today) and slow rolled up the right side banking a few focus. Assaj moved up the left with alarming speed I pounced on Sunny and managed to destroy her in a single round of firing. A few rounds later, the Trandoshan was dead and Dash too.

Then it was Assaj and Poe. I quickly realized (too late) that there was no possibility of Poe beating Assaj 1v1. With her mobile arc I couldn't approach without getting shot up and I didn't have enough shields or firepower to take her on in a fight, so I ran... for 45 minutes. In the end Assaj killed Poe, but I made Miguel work for it.

Game 2 ...

I can't remember my opponent's name, but he flew Lowric, Biggs, and Nora. Both Biggs and Nora were regen. I couldn't crack this list. The way how it all works my list didn't have the damage output to take it down. I caught a break when my opponent flew Lowric the wrong way onto a rock. Then I could put some damage on Lowric and eventually killed him.

The game ended with a weird moment that may have changed the outcome when my opponent revealed my dial and executed the maneuver I had chosen which was different to his chosen maneuver. When we figured out what happened I just say F it, play it as it lays. I probably should have had him redo the maneuver (he had bumped a ship and it seemed to be too hard to return the game to the previous state). Nora killed Poe after Poe couldn't kill off Biggs.

Dash lived but couldn't save the day.

Game 3 vs Scott and his Return of the Brobots

I faced B and C with ion cannons Advanced Sensors and PTL.

Lots of action economy with Scott's list. The Brobots gave chase to Poe with Dash following. I thought Poe had dodged arc on one of the brobots but was barely in. He got tagged by an ion cannon and then it was a long agonizing death for Poe with turn after turn of being ioned. Meanwhile, Dash circled around and managed to nearly kill off one of the Bros.

The game ended with one of the bots making an ill advised sloop that placed him off the board. A slim win. (Even if that bit hadn't slooped off the board, he only had 1 hull left. I think Dash would have killed him that same round.)

This game I got frustrated with myself. I kept forgetting Lone Wolf and forgetting to grab tokens from Rey. Luckily Dash could keep it together, despite my poor play.

Game 4...

(My wife got kinda pissed that I was going to head home later than I estimated, so I had to do damage control via text for the first two rounds. I felt bad for my opponent and apologized) I forgot the name of this player too. He played VI Bossk and VI Nym. Both of these ships had so many upgrades I couldn't remember them all. Nym came blasting forward to take out Dash with his cruise missiles. Countermeasures came in handy to stop that plan. I knew Nym had to be taken out first from my Vassal practice, so I concentrated on that. After several rounds, Dash was gone but Nym was down to 1 health and Bossk was down to no shields.

Poetensity came through for me in the end. Evade and focus when I was expecting to be shot, focus and TL when not.

Poe killed Nym, then got behind Bossk and the rest was history.

All my opponents were very nice and fun to play against. I hope I didn't ruin Scott's vibe with too much of my moaning about forgetting stuff. I was frustrated with myself.

All in all, it was a fun time and I'm really glad I went (despite winding up in the dog house!)

finished 12 of 22 after Swiss and came home with a R2-D2 integrated astromech card and alt art engine upgrade.

My buddy wound up 22 of 22 but went home with a complete set of range rulers AND the store awarded him with a bottle of Tito's Vodka! That's a pretty sweet consolation prize.

I really liked The list I ran. I want to keep practicing it for a while (and on the mat not the screen!) until I get really good with it.

I've forgotten Rey (both beginning of combat and end phase) more times than I can count. I hate knowing that I could have done better had I remembered all the triggers. Nice come back in the last two games, though! I'm going to give both BB-8 and R2-D2 variants of Intensity Poe a real run through the grinder the next week and see which one I like most, BB-8 up first. I'm leaning toward Miranda as his wing woman for both versions over either Dash or Leebo and see how I like that. I've been playing Nym/Miranda a LOT, and I've gotten pretty decent with Miranda. Intensity R2-D2 Poe might be a good replacement for old regen Corran in that pairing.

Thanks for the write up! Glad to hear you had fun, hope for not in too much time in the dog house!

One of my favorite advantages of BB-8 Poe over regen Poe is the ability to strip two locks per turn with Black One. Did that ever come up in your matches?

Sounds like a good outing.

What do you think you would change, in order to take on those first two lists?

The first game came down to a target priority mistake. I should have focused down on Assaj, and left the other two for clean up. Poe by himself can very easily kill any YV-666.

The second game, I think if I had run away after Lowric died I'd have won. SonInshouod have been a bit more strategic and just kept running with Dash and Poe, getting an occasional shot with Dash off. I was too aggressive. 3 Rebel ships with 3 dice out the front is dangerous.

This sounds like some of the same tournament mistakes I make. I have a really hard time playing "tournament" X-wing, which can sometimes be "run until time runs out and you win".
