Enough squads for a gaming group?

By Hindrick, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Hi!

I'm a new player to X-Wing. Since I enjoy this game so much I was going to introduce this game to my girlfriend and three other friends who I usually only play regular boardgames with. Maybee even my son. We have a local store that offers tournaments but it's too competetive for my taste.

We're not into Star Wars per se. Especially not the Rebel cartoon series which is absolutely terrible. But I really, really love the miniature game part. So it's only the classic ships I grew up with I want to play with :)

Enough backgrount. To my question:

Was wondering if it's somewhat viable and balanced to only buy one of each of the the small base, classic ships, from the 3 first waves plus the veteran/aces packs?

Will it get tiresome fast or is there enough options there with just thoose ships that it's replayable for the money it costs? I can get all of it for the equivalent cost of US$190, including the core set.

Maybe buy doubles of some packs? I can buy single upgrade cards at the store aswell if something vital is missing. Like the TIE Advanced title.

If I've counted correctly it'll give:

Rebels

2x A-Wing
2x B-Wing
2x X-Wing
1x Y-Wing

Imperials

1x TIE Advanced
2x TIE Bomber
3x TIE Interceptor
3x TIE Fighter

Thankful for all the help i can get.

You've got it pretty well figured out for OT content. If it's in your budget, I would add a Rebel Transport. It opens Epic Play and adds another X-wing with more pilots and astromechs. If you don't want the Imperial Assault Carrier (SW Rebels hater) you should at least try to get the additional TIE fighters from that expansion.

If you're not playing competitively, then proxy upgrade cards you don't have.

This^^

Dont buy cards if your not playing competitively. Just get the ships. Usually there is a facebook trade/sell group or even ebay where you can just get the ships without certain upgrade cards for cheaper price.

Proxying the upgrades will keep you entertained for a long long time. Ywings can be missile carriers, or bomb carriers, or turret ships. Awings can be blockers or aces like jake. Lots of options.

Haha. Thanks. Didn't even occur to me to proxy. Can even do it with the expensive pilot cards aswell. Sounds good. Just need to find some page with decent scans then.

But only OT ships is ok then? Can I for example play a theme of 2x A-Wings vs 2x TIE Interceptors without too much imbalance? Or like 4x TIE fighters vs 2x X-Wings? Don't want too much imbalance because I'm going to treat it as a complete regular boardgame, sort of.

Just do 60pt matches and you should be good. That can be 4-5 tie fighters and 2 xwings and maybe an Awing.
