It works, but I don't understand what Sato brings to this fleet. You can't add external racks until close range, and with torpedos only getting one dice at each range band one dice at long isnt going to do much.

I think the only way Sato is worth his points is if you can proc a crit effect at long range that makes that one or 2 dice worth while. Concussion missles or apt are the natural choices. Especially concussion becomes dangerous when spammed, and turns that black from a best/worst case scenario 2/1 shields to a best/worst case 5/3. Multiplied over 5 ships that is huge.

Also be careful of opening salvo. Big ships like isds can get within 1 or 2 damage of one shotting a hammerhead at long range. Handing them 2 extra red dice might mean trouble for you.

I like what you're saying about concussion missles, I just like the hopeless amount of black dice these guys will throw at close range.

That is valid, but you don't need or want Sato for that. He is a waste of points as you would get far more out of Dodonna or Rieekan (as you are guaranteed to lose a hammerhead, and he guarantees you don't have one sunk before using externals.)

I like sato for bomber fleets. Black dice hell from your carriers is as effective as the couple of crits i get with dodonna. Defiance or paragon with 4 black dice, or an mc30 with 5 black and rerolls. One or two of those. Pelta and yavaris black double arcs are a disincentive for demo. 2 blacks from gr75. Black dice everywhere.

Of course if I win it is due to yavaris. Not using yavaris is my next challenge.

I flew this list this afternoon. In the first match, it slaughtered Sloane with a VSD, Quasar, 2x Gozanti & a crap ton of TIEs of various flavours. Next match it broke was Tarkin with VSD, Interdictor, 2x Raiders with 2 Decimators Morna & a generic. The H'heads flank to one side, the AFMkII goes the other way with the GR75. The Z swarm with the YT goes with the frigate, and the Rogues go off with the H'heads. The Rogues push ahead of the H'heads to get into range for Sato to trigger, even at long range, and with a concentrate fire dial I'm throwing multiple black as soon as possible. Push into close range and unload hell with 6 black dice (red/blue convert to black, along with one black native, add 2 from Racks, 1 from CF). The Rogues get supported by the GR75 who slinks up the middle of the map to be just in R5 of the Rogues, who open up on whatever my target is. Sure, I'll lose some of the H'heads, but taking that's the price of glory. The Z/YT push forward with the AFMkII and harass and annoy any fighters, while they slip into R1 of the rest of the enemy fleet, allowing me to Sato the rolls from the Frigate. I've used a variant of this list three times so far this week, and I'm 3-0 with it.
