Defence value: the total points of defence that the target has. (npc only?)
defence rating: same as defence value. (pc only?)
defence: the number of black dice added to an attackers dice pool due to armor or shields worn by the defender, this value is given in the armor/shields table on WHFR p. 77
active defence: action cards used by characters. these include dodge, parry, block, and their improved versions. these add dice to an attackers dice pool and have certain conditions that must be met by the defender to allow their use. they also have a recharge time so they cannot be used against every attack.
I wonder if we could get FFG to put out a glossary.

reprint fixes are much better than FAQ's ;0
I still dont really get this whole defense-thing. The physical characteristics (Strenght, Toughness, Agility) seem quite unbalanced to me, when Im looking at the things, they do in combat.
Strength influences my chances to hit in melee combat AND the damage I do, when I hit something. Furthermore it lets me Parry, if I have at least 3 Strength.
Toughness influences my Wound Threshhold AND my Soak Value. Furthermore it lets me Block, if I have at least 3 Toughness.
Agility influences my chances to Hit in Ranged Combat and it lets me Dodge, if I have at least 3 Agility.
So... from a min-maxers point of view, I would never ever spend points on Agility, since I get much more bang for the buck on Strength and Toughness.
It would have seemed logical and more balanced to me, if Agility would influence my Defense-Value (like Agility + Defense of Armor/Shields).
Is it really a bit unbalanced, or am I getting this wrong?
Ooops, it just occured to me, that Agility also influences the Damage you do in Ranged Combat. So I guess, its pretty balanced again...
Sorry for spamming...
And Agility is important for your Initiative!
Agility as been said is main stat for ranged combat and all ranged skills. It's also important for initiative, as well as stealth characters.
