Avoiding the mess in the middle of the mat.

By Velvetelvis, in X-Wing

Let's say someone was interested in practicing movement and flanking.

It seems that most games inevitably turn into a bumpy mess somewhere and I would rather not do that.

I've been trying to build squads that prefer to stay at a distance and do things.but...thats proving easier said then done.

In the opinion of the group, would a person be better served running three ships that ALL want to be flanking to maxise that or should it be something that goes in the middle and slugs while a flanker does flanky things.

I'm looking to work on this with imperials. Phantoms specifically. But finding the other 60 points or so is bugging me.

I could use a nudge on this issue.

1 sienar test pilot with title

2 tempest squadron pilots with accuracy corrector.

59 points

Block with the sienar and joust with the tempest. They last suprisingly long with 3 green dice and a dedicated defencive focus or evade.

I think you should do what a magician does: Misdirection. Distract him with your punchy ships while the flanker magically appears out of nowhere to blind side him. Easier said than done if your flanker is the obvious threat.

Just got to find that balance between your flanker and your bullet sponge.

There are tactics to minimise it, but the only way to really avoid it is to run many turrets/aux arcs. Even then there's no accounting for an opponent that flys erratically.

lol, I haven't seen a mid mat furball since TIE Phantoms came out and brought in the movement game to X-wing. I mean I sort of like the bump-n-brawl but then again I am a B-wing player and mid mat pileup brawls is where the B-wing is the best at.

Come to think of it B-wings w/tractor and Adv Sensors might be something to consider.

You can work with 3 flankers - triple imperial aces is a thing - but you'll do better with an 'anvil' of some kind - a TIE defender, a couple of bombers, or a mini-swarm of TIE fighters, are a nice solid block that people can't afford to ignore.

Or a Patrol Leader with Darth Vader aboard. Simple, but very good at drawing people's attention.

Just don't fly to the centre of the mat at the same time as your opponent.

Agree with Magnus. Two flankers + anvil is best. That gives you the ability to fly a DISTRACTION CARNIFEX up the gut, ensuring that your intended flankers can flank. The problem with using a squad of all flankers is that you need to be quite clever to escape with the one that gets targeted, and you can't always predict who will draw attention first.

My favorite example of flankers + anvil is a squad consisting of Soontir Fel, Turr Phennir / Carnor Jax, and Countess Ryad.
