Proxing unreleased upgrade cards

By Moohnzie, in X-Wing

Man all of your casual nights are weird .

In my area, casual night means that I can try something fun that I don't get to fly very often, like an A-Wing swarm or Vader with Swarm Leader and a bunch of Acadamy Pilots or Boba Fett flanked by a couple HWKs or Biggs/Wedge/Luke or some such and expect to go up against a reasonably similar list, unless a tournament is around the corner and people are practicing for it.

I don't think I've ever witnessed someone in my FLGS proxy a card that wasn't released yet, in any of my games or anyone else's I've personally seen. It would feel really strange if someone offered to.

Play with the toys you have right now. There will be time for the new stuff when it's released.

There is Zero reason for someone to say no, if You explain to the people your playing against you want to try out cards that have not come out in a casual setting.

Just print out some copies of the pictures and talk with your people's let them know your trying things out and go for it.

The fly causal is more about the players saying let's have fun with our plastic ships and shout PEW PEW PEw.

its really strange to me that people would frawn on it unless they are practicing for a Torny or worlds or their up right people that have to stick to the rules no matter what. (Which is why I gave up warhammer, that and someone saying they were going to kill me for playing at a different store)

Edit after 2 years of not getting to play I honestly don't care what other people bring and want to try out. I am just happy to play and focus on flying better, smiling through mistakes and being a good opponent.

Well there are reasons, for example if someone wants to get in some practice before a store championship they would be more inclined to play with only released legal cards. However again it all comes down to mutual agreement for all players.

Hi, OP here. I asked how other X wing communities handled unreleased proxy cards and I think it is hard to compare communities in regard to that question. “Casual Night” I think means something different to each community and I probably should not have used that phrase. We don’t have a “casual Night” per se, just some FLGSs where everyone is expected to bring a 100/6 list and then play whoever is next in line. With the exception of newer players (sometimes), all lists will be competitive and tournament worthy.

In our community, if someone brings a theme list, they will have to expect to play Fenn boats, Dengar/Tel, Miranda/Dash, etc. Nothing wrong with this, this is how our community has evolved over the years (good players with solid lists all the time). Members will be trying new lists, certain synergies or jank but you can be assured that it will be thought over and carefully constructed to win their games for that night. Our community is great with some excellent players. We all have fun by the end of night but it is still an appropriately competitive environment.

Thanks for the feedback, I just found it mildly annoying about bringing unreleased cards, and even though I would not refuse to play, I would definitely prefer it if they left that for their own kitchen table.

The community I play is fairly ok with proxying stuff, in general. There is an X-wing night where you can pretty much bring what you want (there are not rules as such). However, "casual" does mean you follow X-wing's "basic" rules, so you won't have someone coming along with a RAC+Fen list or something like that (although I personally find it odd people figuring "casual" to mean that, but ok...)

I've already tried some of the GfH box, particularly the Starviper's new title, but I always bring 2/3 lists to try out anyway, but usually people were keen on playing against it. People are always quick to point out if they're looking to practice for tournaments and such. In the end, people talk to each other and decide on it, usually on the spot anyway.

We also have a local league and, for those, there was agreement on only proxying released stuff (ie, you don't need to have the cards, can just print out your list). So, at the moment, nothing from Guns for Hire is "legal" on the league games.
