Risen from the Flames - Phoenix Fiction

And Phoenix did reference the Lion.

I kinda thought the "like a lion" was meant a bit more literal. I took it to mean that she was acting beastly, rather than as a swipe at another clan that they aren't really interacting with in story. If they were going for that, I'd think they'd go with "like a unicorn". Not saying that Unicorn aren't reverent, but they kinda have a conflict going on with the Phoenix, and are the new kids on the block relatively, and the Lion of all clans should know how to respect their ancestors.

To step with the right foot is to awaken the martial spirit. The reference was most likely to the clan.

Not to mention "Lion" was capitalized...

It isn't stated in this story - but part of Tsukune's lore (at least in ol5r) is that she was trained in the Akodo War Collage after faltering as an Isawa Shugenja. I thought it was a call back to this bit in that she wasn't entirely at home with the Phoenix after much of her training was spent with the Lion.

This paragraph also calls back to it:

Quote

They were old, young, and gempuku fresh, more members of the Shiba family than she could recall ever having seen in one place. Above, the wind stirred the tapestries hanging from the slanted roofs of the stages used for the sacred dance. Gifts from other temples in other provinces, they were like the Shiba beneath them: vibrant splashes of color amid the gray stone and polished wood of the shrine. All save for one: a rustic and faded depiction of a waterfall, thrust high above a pine canopy. The column of stamps in a dry corner told its story: Lion in origin, completed in Phoenix lands. Among the others, its colors were faded, inexpert, and unbalanced.

Just curious if "brushing knuckles" is the same thing as "bumping uglies"

Is that what the kids in Rokugan are calling it now?

In my day we called "enlightenment victory" because it was awkwardly over complicated and only fun for one person

I don't think Tsukune was ever trained to become a Shugenja. You may be thinking of Kitsu Motso?

You are right about her training at the Akodo War College though.

Step one: win in bed

Step two: eat the loser

Step three: brag about your prowess as a lover........it's not like they can argue with you while they are digesting in your stomach.

What's the problem again? :P

You win sir... The Shadowlands takes over the Throne and the Spider clan are back in canon. The Unicorn clan spoiler article has been replaced and bumped up in schedule to happen next week. The Phoenix will understand...

That could work too.

Oni no Tsuburu is pretty close to that.

Quote

Tsukune still felt something on her shoulder, a light touch resting, but there was nothing there. She curled her fingers around Ofushikai’s handle and, after a moment, drew the sword halfway from its sheath. In the reflection of its mirrored blade, she saw the face of a seventeen-summers girl.

And behind her, the face of Ujimitsu. Gone were his weathered wrinkles and his glorious winged kataginu. He wore simple rustic garb and the hint of a smile. His hand rested on her shoulder. Beyond him were dozens of Phoenix warriors. Old, young, female, and male, their clothes ranging from recent to antique, they filled the chamber, their glowing bodies filtering the light of the moon and casting no shadows. Generations of Phoenix Clan Champions, all standing with her, all offering that same subtle smile.

A thought came in a voice that was not hers, yet sounded so familiar. You will never be alone, Tsukune. She sheathed the blade and released a silent breath. “I will do my best,” she whispered. Above, the stone face of Shiba smiled upon her.

Not going to lie, I teared up a little at this part. Good fiction all around and its nice to see Mr. Denton's L5R fiction writing again.

And then, you need to split your head with a hammer and give birth to Athena. I guess it fits the greek mythology legacy of ol5r...

Sure bro, you can decide to be with me or against me - I'm with the Unicorn. I even thought Shu2jack's comment was harsh - but hey, you wanna keep this up? I got all day ^_^

I'm in this for good natured banter - I even gave you the "Kachiko can't wear a kimono" line to hit back on lol but you know what would be MORE fun? Baggin on Crane and Lion with you ^_^ I hope the Unicorn get a stellar story this time!

I have no desire to bag on the Lion. :D

As a Shadowlands player I would prefer a Great Bear skin rug. I'll make slippers out of Lion pelts. Make their mouths open and close while I walk so it looks like they are roaring.
